Update, went for a more colorful variety. :P
It's not that visible in the viewportscreen but I've added some multiplied materials, like fabric n such so now I have a proper base, so next is go mad with my brushes. I want to have quite a contrasty look on him when all the maps are done. He will be pretty dirty but still have shiny nice parts n such, not that dirty perhaps, but kinda like beautiful and ugly at the same time. :P
All the yellow will look like gold later btw.
I will try it out in marmoset at work tomorrow since it doesn't work properly in my computer.
Looking great dude, I don't know about that purple on the arms though. Maybe try a version with red there just like on the legs. And do you plan to do any subtle design work on the belt buckle?
Thanks. I'm pretty happy with the purple but it could be too much as well. Some more opinions would be appreciated.
Dunno what to do with the belt buckle, I might add greentooth there as well in the normal map and with some additional ornaments perhaps.
It's kinda frustrating I can't use marmoset at home. Results are pretty different. :P
Perhaps it's my drivers. I'll check.
Great character! I kind of agree with nrek, something about the pure red or green you are using is sucking away the coolness of the texturing. Maybe just change the tint or saturation to make it look a bit less like Xmas colors.
But the character design and style of your model are still rocking! I think you should overlay some diamonds tiling texture in there like this : http://www.halloweencostume.co.uk/images/characters/clown.jpg, maybe on the pants or shirt to really bring out more of the awesome..
Thanks for the feedback. I went for another direction with the colors. I hope you all like it.
I will make patterns for the clothing as well, and I've noted down a whole bunch of other things I need to fix.
If I'm going to make it in time I think the diffuse must be more or less finished tomorrow. Need to "rig" and skin this bastard as well. Not to mention the presentation...
Also got started on the pedestal. He will sit on a stone bench at some town square and play while making his evil yet happy grin.
Thanks, I'll makes some tiny changes though. I think I'll darken the metal and perhaps even the wood on the banjo to make it look a bit rougher like the character. I might also saturate the green stripes in order to make them pop up a bit more. Tiny though. I could skip them and just make final adjustments in marmoset. :P
New shot in marmoset. Still diffuse as specular. A bit too colorful on some places. :P
Sorry for spamin but I think I'm calling the diffuse done for now. Still gotta do the spec.
Tomorrow though I will rig and skin him and hopefully even make the pose.
And also I got Marmoset working properly at home, yay!
The "makeup" will be dark in the spec so the face won't glow. :P
Rigging and skinning done, playing around with the pose. I think I'll have different poses in the beauty and presentation. Perhaps I should make him more neutral in the presentationm like standing an just holding the banjo? It would be easier to show every detail on him.
Also done with the pedestal and specular for the character. Will do some adjustments though.
Made the bloom in these pics redish which gave a pretty nice effect I think.
Hey, he came out great Aimbiz.
I'm looking forward to seeing him fully lit. The soft lighting you've got going at themoment is kind of flattening things out a bit, but it's nothing a good 3 point setup wouldn't fix.
Damn, I'm running tight on time. Will hopefully get some sleep this night, hopefully...
Realised no posteffects where allowed in 3d programs. It looked so much better with a bit of sharpen and some tiny bloom.
And Beltann, I had missed the fact that you were swedish!
This has been a pretty rewarding experience and I've learned alot. Next time I will plan more beforehand so the presentation gets more time. Even if I'm fairly content with the other non beautyshot images they were pretty rushed over a night. I realised I had underestimated how hard composition can be.
I'm getting pretty excited already what might become of next dominancewar. Already getting some loose idea of what direction I would like to take if the rules allow it.
But for now I will chill a bit, and then get back on practicing my conceptart.
Good luck to everyone. This time polycount will own!
this is my fav entry so far, at least in terms of character. this goes so far beyond the usual 'cool nasty beast'...
my only suggestion is that the mustard-shirt and hat could be a deeper green, more akin to the hat-jewels. i'd also consider including the stripes on the front of the shirt and hat.
Shotgun: Yeah, I agree about the jewels and you might be on to something about the colors. Done is done though. Can only wait now, but thanks anyway. I could always do some adjustments in marmoset when putting this in my portfolio.

love the colors you went with in the last image, the green and brown reminds me of link from Zelda.

My shadows always get so grainy. Any tips?
maybe give some main spots more saturated colours, to get some more contrast and to give the character more importance
maybe red and yellow .. green and brown desaturated as they are.. or whatever .. something like that
keep on!

This guy's in my personal top ten. So much style comin through on this guy, and the pose just nailed it
Give yourself a pat on the back
Okay, I'm on the final hours here. Just finished the beautyshot. Will now put the rest together and in the meantime you can crit this...
