Suburbbum: oh no, don't do that, lol. I'll feel bad. thx though, glad you like my work.
Eoq: tyvm. I do use photoshop but the black/white sketches are mostly marker/ink on artboard. I scan them in and toy with the contrast and some atmospheric lighting with photoshop. I also combine more than one sketch to make a better composition sometimes.
Dll: Hey man, thx, appreciate that. Good to know Im doing something right, lol.
Here are a few more things I got. Im super busy at work but Im going to try and post my daily sketches and stuff, stay tuned...

Hey guys, back again. A couple friends have been pushing me to make some process posts to show how I do my ink/marker stuff. So I figured why not, Ill be taking a character and an enviro sketch to a finished state and explaining my steps as I go along. Work is crazy so wont be done today but here's how I start out. Hope you guys enjoy!...
Step 01: Materials and Workspace
I really like working with inks and markers, mainly what you see here in these photos:
- Copic Wide Tip Markers (C1, C3, C5, C7)
- Cool Grey #6 2-Sided Touch Marker
- Bic Mark-It Permanent Marker (dried out and soaked in a liquid graphite and speedball ink mixture)
- Pelikan All-Purpose Black Paint
- An assortment of Clay Shaper sculpting tools
- Wooden palette knives
- Glass-top work table (one of three sifferent work stations in my tiny bedroom studio, lol)
- - -
These are the main three solutions I work with. Straight out of the bottle Super Black Speedball Ink, Some Powdered Graphite that I mix with a small amount of water and botanic oil (don't ask why it just works, lol), and finally a mini tub of Gain Laundry detergent...no not the whole thing. It was near empty so I just appropriated it and mixed about a 3/4 of a cap with the Pelikan paint. I like it because its smooth, dries slow on yupo paper, and it makes my paintings smell really nice.

Step 02: Visual Brainstorming
I almost always start out with a few pages of thumbnails, first just to get into a rhythm, then after about a page or so, I start to expand with different designs more focused on whatever pops into my head that I think would be a cool idea. Usually by the time I get to 2 or 3 pages I've formulated exactly what the idea is, then I either do one more page or so with that idea strictly in mind, or I start doing some full page sketches. In this case however, Im starting with full page sketches since there really is no set design parameters, it's just whatever I think of. Here are some sketches that Ill be picking from. Might do some more character sketches when I get home, and come to think of it, might do some thumbnails after all, lol...

Best art bomb i've seen in a while, and now you give us a tutorial!!!
Mr. Lemonhead, you spoil us!
I've tried developing a similar workflow but only using digital media (based on a scott robertson gnomon dvd), trying to emulate marker sketches in photoshop. It nearly works but it misses something. You've inspired me to have another go at it.
Stinger88: haha. Man that Scott Robertson DvD is awesome, and also a big part of how I got where I am with this kind of process. I only started using Copic Markers because of that DvD, lol, that guy is amazing. Also the Syd Mead Value Sketching DvD got me super inspired to do more marker stuff.
Here are some more sketches for ideas. I did end up doing some thumbnails and in doing so decided to go with a real gadget/scifi type of feel, with a character and an enviro that look to belong to the same world. Nornally I take a bit more time with more sketches but I don't have a whole lot of it to myself these days so I'm going to push on from here and pick a character thumb and enviro to go with...Ill post the next steps when Ive gotn em done...

Couldn't sleep so I did some sketching for a bit and came out with one that I really like. Not sure how far Ill take it but this is where it is for now...

Seriously, really diggin that loose brush style of yours. Could perhaps whish for some more definition on some images but it's really cool none the less!
AimBIZ: Glad you like it. I am starting to push these ink sketches into more refined states. We'll see where I end up with them. Yw for the tutorial, Ill try to get to the rest of it shortly, very busy right now though.
OrganizedChaos: Hey Crystel, thx, it's always cool to see peoples reaction to these at sketchgroup. Hearing what they see is often very funny. More secrets soon...
Id love to see you scketch something out from start to finish. Heck, even just watching you doodle in the sketchbook with that ink technique. This is veeery rad man.
Completely amazing. i would LOVE to see a bit of how you actually use those materials to build up these images. I know very little about traditional mediums and would love to have more of an understanding of how to try this stuff!
been spending the last few weeks working on all new stuff for my ink book. getting a new scanner and also going to be making a video of how I work on these larger ink paintings. Until I get all that going (a week maybe) I wanted to post just a few things, so here are a couple...apologies for the quality, most of these are iPhone photos.
here is a WIP for the cover of the ink book Im putting together. I have several more ideas that I'll be posting after I get the scanner, and I might even make the video with the cover design sketch to final paint...we'll see.
Oh man! How could I've missed this sketchbook.
Really cool stuff!
My favorite is the first one you posted on the page that was a mix between photoshop and traditional
Raaad indeed!
Stinger88-RKHansen-Callesw: Thx you guys, glad they inspire, Im really excited about this video as well Stinger, lol.
Rectangl: Wow thx, I actually got to meet Capullo at the last comic con in austin...was great to be able to see him work.
Sketchzombie: Lol thx man. I do have a website...haven't updated it in a very long time, but I probably will very soon now. the link is in my post signature.
Here's a couple more iPhone scans. Going to try and start posting daily with sketches and digital WIPs. I've been o tied up with work the last few months, its fun to have some time to just crank out whatever I want.
