i love Sagat's giant traps and sternomastoids and weee tiny head. almost like he got his had shrunk by a witch doctor like in beetlejuice. and im not being negative i like it.
suburbbum - cheers
LRoy - I have been working as a professional since 2002
AnimeAngel, dom - thanks guys!
Redfender - proportions got changed around before I could settle on the final feel for him. still has massive ass traps and sterno' though
crits are welcome
This was a sketch I did the other week and I threw some colours on it tonight, might some extra work I guess. I have more sketches just the subject matter is less varied and interesting so I have to make sure this week I explore some 'fresh' ideas.
Nothing like fresh thinking to inspire.
Ooo! I love how crisp the edges are of the handwrap. I've always struggled to get that type of definition with overlapping cloth like that. Is that a product of retopology or something else? if you don't mind me asking.
Some sweet work man, I love your character designs.
the only crit I would have for your Sagat is the abdominal oblique on the thoracic portion seems kinda weird to me. Here's a ref I found that might help.
Robat - a cheap workflow can do the trick. I have a layer or two of actual 'bandage models' and then a 'shell' with some sculpted bandages on top of it. I created the bandage meshes in max. It was all pretty quick and dirty
JeremyRM - I think your talking about the intercostals? In your ref pic they are crunched up. I have to admit a lot of people dont have them defined but they are one of my favourite muscular elements - even though I suck at nailing them. I did an update and kept them big and simple yet pushed the flows so that they cross the ribs and angling down into the abs in two distinct directions. Thanks for the feedback!
well, it leads to great results. Nice defined planebreaks look like they would bake down well, and the frilling of the edges around the knuckles lead to a nice focal point.
Thanks! I'll have to experiment with that kind process. Sounds straight forward enough.
That still looks all wrong. The intercostals are not something you can see. I suppose maybe in some extreme case you could? I don't know, but I doubt it. They're just muscles going between the ribs, in order to expand and contract the ribcage:
What you're describing is the top part of the External Obliques:
That's what tucks in where the Serratus muscles are. In some poses and positions it may seem as if those last few digitations are separate muscles, such as this case:
But it's still the Oblique. It shouldn't wrap around the ribcage like that, since those fibers merge into the tissue that's between the Abdominals and the Obliques. Like this drawing shows:
darbeenbo - thats pure penis head!
Fred2303, JeremyRM and Robat thanks
Hey Bigjohn I can see you care about anatomy which is great! I am using the name intercostals in the same manner it is used for body building. You are technically correct the external oblique covers the intercostals!
I am pretty happy with them being exaggerated but I'll take another look at them! Just a few images as a point of ref from where I came from.
They look fine to me, only thing that stands out to me is the lats arent overlapping the serratus anterior. Still amazing work though Tim, more inspiration folder goodness
I think it works now too considering it is pretty stylized piece. Here's a model I like to go off of, you can see the oblique diving between the serratus. I think the exaggeration spacemonkey has works considering they each dive under and connect to a different rib. It would separate the fibers into the groupings you see.
Quick update with the early texture work. I decided to check out marmoset as I had never gotten around to using it. Now I need to finish it up before the trial ends or buy it

do both, you get marmoset, we get pretty art before the new year.....win/win.
looking good Tim, if you ever get the inclination a better breakdown on those arm bandages would be ace....my tiny brain read what you did several times, but still doesn't understand it.
Sometimes I don't even know why I get up in the morning.
Damn.
That being said whatever is going on wioth the shorts there shader-wise is really sucking the shape out of them and kind of letting down the overall image quality. Also what LRoy said. Is there like a little clip behind his jaw? ...not an entirely terrible idea...
-edit-nevermind about the patch, just saw post 514 on the last page,
Thanks guys, Scuds I will fix the shorts eventually. been working on other things but occasionally play with the skin shaders. I think the new setup works better, its more flexible with different lighting and doesnt rely on the diffuse as much.
Feedback on the skin is welcome!
it'd be really nice to see like, some flipped normals, or a texture seam or some bad stretching or something. Just something that would show your a human and not some crazy art-robot from the future sent back in time to cause despair in lesser men. like some kind of Artinator or something....
Forgot to post these images from the same batch as the stuff from the last pics..
DillonBarba - hey its not so much the painting its the shader and approach to the textures - that work for the shader which should be interesting. I am planning on writing up some info for the Marmoset guys to help illustrate how to use their skin shader - just need the time to do it and everything else
EiGHT - yeah I am definitely going to do a video
Scudz - check the arm pits and the jagged polygons on the underarm
Tenchi and Ged - thanks guys
JFletcher - yeah its hes diligent about removing all his body hair
almighty_gir - if you are talking about the area above the clavicle its partly a bake issue that I just didnt anticipate - the rig has clavicles! my crappy skinning is mostly fine.. poor planning earlier is the issue
Shiniku - yeah as mentioned I plan to write up some tutorial notes for the marmoset guys!
OMG this is incredible, PLEASSSE show us a quick demo of you setting up a scene in marmoset and playing with the shaders because these results are incredible and would help allllot of people out
Wow, this came out really nice. His shorts do lack some texture details though, perhaps you could add some color variation or something, like a white stripe on the side with some text(for the brand) or something.

wtf I searched your oldest posts from 2007 and you were still amazing. when did you first start?

1. Abdominals, 2. Serratus, 3. Intercostals, 4. Obliques
in what cases would you see some rib definition as well as the former two?

Can we see some wires? The wraps have a good amount of depth to them.

I wonder if it would be nice to spare a couple tris to pull out the wraps a little bit to make it look layered? Either way, cool stuff.
Although I have much more I want to do - i have some other commitments so I dont have much time to finish ... its late or I would comment more.

Digging the skin detail. Are you thinking of getting a 3d print of this guy when you're done?
Amazing work man! is this still in Marmoset?

All in all a groovy update well worth the wait
I was going to comment on the lack of eyebrows but then I googled sagat.
fix it! don't ruin a great model with a shitty rig.
