Look at pictures... Figure out how stuff works, and then try to replicate an image without using the eyedropper. Try to think of how and why a certain shape get a certain color etc.
I'm no expert, but that approach seems to work for me
Ech, better.
prolly take a fallout2 break.
Progress, however, it seems.
Gonna paint a few heads, and a metal study every chance i get (perhaps everyday) and eventually do more cloth, because thats where i'm having lots of trouble currently, also have to work on defining colors more, less smudgey shit, better brush strokes, overall better depth and coloring, shading, everything.
Yup.
Each time his gun fires, it drives his teeth further into his gumline, causing his gums to bleed.
The hair from his greasy muttonchops has fused with his decapitated dog, and rifle (sten machine gun apparently)and the ejected casings are released from his rectum.
He also carries light reading material with him at all times.
I think since 7 (when they first introduced the more complex brushes ) photoshop has been tablet compatible, probably earlier - just be sure to check your brush presets 'other dynamics' setting and see if flow/opacity is controllable by pen pressure.
I forgot this a couple of times and was rebooting photoshop, restarting the PC and plugging in/unplugging the tablet in a vain attempt to get it to work before I discovered this. :P
Sai is nice, but i'm not entirely certain how dynamic it is as a program, maybe i'm using it wrong. Although I am starting to see some notable improvement, mostly because i've gotten some sort of a grasp over the idea of painting.
Does photoshop offer a wider scale of things to do? Or is it just a preference thing for many of you on this website?
If you like the aliased lines - then Sai is okay, but Photoshop will give you a lot more dynamics , especially when it comes to brushe style, control etc.
Check out the photoshop brushes thread - some great examples of what you can do with it. I did a couple of random cats 1234 - all photoshop brushes, but you can achieve the look of pencil/watercolour/acrylic/oil with a bit of playing with settings.
I'd love to see some of your stuff in it, you've got a really nice style - would benefit from all the extra control in photoshop, especially for layering and cleaning up lines etc .
Ahah, my "style" would be better if I had a grasp of basic anatomy. But, yeah, i'll probably work on getting better at photoshop, maybe it'll feel more natural, although i'm still not used to using a tablet.
I started by just using it to colour stuff - have a go at taking one of your existing ones and painting over to get a feel for it.
Would love to see this one coloured in :
Oh and dude - stick this up on DA and link them - for a start a few favourites is always a bit of inspiration, secondly they'll be JPG and won't kill people who are stuck on slow connections - thirdly and selfishly - DA isn't blocked at my work and I can check this thread out in the day.

Lately when i've been bored, I browse the Zelda series wiki and draw one of the characters if I can't think of anything myself. I try to re-draw them in a 60's hippy style, except in a multi-planetary space society. (Link has to travel to the 3 moons of the planet, then go into dark space maybe, im not quite sure yet, and destroy all of the temple guardians that hold the force field on the main temple)
Link in his mystical "Thermal Tunic," which grants him the ability to traverse the cold moons of Hyrule, in his quest to break their hold over the universe, so that he may return Ganondorf to the Twilight (Deep, dark space) http://poonhat.deviantart.com/art/Cold-link-138047641
A floating dog. With fish in tow.
Why a fish?
(Because I had difficulty drawing a hamburger.)
Gasp, after taking an extensive look (read; not looking at all) at my previous works, i have noted a distinct lack of two things;
Animals, and environments. This picture contains one of those two..
Can you guess which one?
"A moody and cliche' fog fills the air..."
A satellite hunter. A scavenger, he lives off of the debris he recovers from the downed satellites, remnants of a time long past, when men took to the skies, and rained mysterious flames from the skies..
"The old gods send their gifts, and I collect."
So gents, it comes to be the time which I ask a question;
What does your work-flow consist of?
Do you spend time drawing up a layer of linework, and then paint over it, using it as mere guidelines for painting, or do you paint within them, andkeep them?
Hmm.
I'm interested in what you do when YOU paint, so please share some insight.
Prior to getting a table I'd draw everything in black felt-pen and colour by mouse in photoshop, then with the tablet, I got into just tracing over photos etc. Now trying to get to grips with drawing on screen. It's been fun looking through all the awesome concept work and looking at other peoples techniques. One I found alien at first was the 'blobbing' technique of just splatting down rough shapes with solid brushes and working them into something gradually.
I am the worlds worst draghtsman so I cheat as much as possible with tracing over ref etc.
I'd love to see what you come up with in photoshop if you were to 'complete' something - IE colour/touch up lines etc.
I either draw the linework in a subtle colour similar to the background, or if it's high contrast linework I put a 80% opacity layer over the top to dampen it down. tend to start with midtones, then go darker, then go lighter, painting over the top of it all
A conquistador in space. The linework isn't exactly fit for coloring, but, eh.
Thanks for your help, will have to try to paint some more, etc. Much Thanks

Uh, This is a preliminary sketch, really. I need to think about how the hell a lobsterman would really look. Until then, enjoy this badong version of it.
I believe this is much more lobster like. The coloration, the claws, the facial features, and the tail.
Much better, imo.
(Lobster society is very macho and tough...red lobsters form the majority of the population, and generally work jobs such as fishing. The rare albino lobster is generally crowned their king, whilst blue lobsters are often cast out while young, as the belief is that their coloring, which matches the sky, is a sign they are meant to wander the corners of the earth, and see the sky from the point of view of the other creatures on the earth. Lobster men live in seaside caves, smelling strongly of salt...)
(and yes, just like kung pow)
You are correct in your assumption, almost..
I use paint tool SAI with a very large canvas and just doodle with a x1 binary brush, and take the doodles I like, and color them in (layering is my friend)
Unless I have something planned out, this is what I've been doing lately

I really wish I could come back after my time off with an amazing project announcement, or some startling progress, but such is not the case. Maybe someday. For now, doodles. http://www13.oekakibbs.com/bbs/claudioacciari/oekakibbs.cgi

I love it!
