the steps look airbrushed, i think he airbrushed the entire thing and only painted in very fine details. People can do so pretty realistic stuff using airbrushing techniques.
and jackwhat yes i agree that hannes's work is artistically a lot more astonishing his progress over the years even more. http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=114449 this is still a topic that keeps me motivated
but don't forget that digital media is still a whole other game than traditional when it comes to mastering your medium.
Those wip pics show typical airbrush workflow, so it looks legit to me. As to why would you do it? Back in the pre-digital age commercial companies might want you to tweak what they got from a photo-shoot, and the airbrush was the weapon of choice. I still use mine occasionally for doing custom paint work for bikers/skaters - basically anything that won't accept a vynil print.

I don't know if it honestly warranted it's own post, usually stuff like this generates alot of hot-air, before it dies down, so decided to post it here on the accounts of Off-Topic.

Sure people will spout hyperbole and perhaps this article is slightly guilty of that but I think it is important for us, especially those considering this industry as a career, to know the history of this industry - how it has evolved to the current state of developer/publisher relations.
Hahah, love the anti-editor attitudes some publishers had.
"I remember EA and Microsoft panicking about the Xbox version saying, 'Well with this people can go out and make a map that says 'F**k!' They can make 'F**k' maps!'
Didn't really want to bring this back up but I noticed the detail they mention, besides what others have said the picture/canvas is sitting on some type of camera stand, the camera is pointing up from her head.:poly136:
Real or not idc really, though if real that's a nice painting.
i bet its a viral ad for prometheus.
in which case it would be some of the most insane CG ever.
then again maybe scientists find mind-blowing crap all the time, they just erase the videos to protect us. so this guy steals one and posts it on you tube with zero explanation.
@wasker: I was going to say definitely fake...but I can't fault the footage, and I usually have a keen eye for these things. Further detective work finds this.

Oh September, why do terrible things happen during...this...month...which incidentally has to do with the next article.
And it made me really sick, I hope I never get stuck in such an area, but seriously, shame on all the publishers involved.

Why is this in the Thread of Awesomeness? Irony? Seems to me that it should have its own thread. Hell I'd sticky it if I could.

Yup. 100% awesome.
I'll see your patterned bed sheet creature, and raise you a clear caterpiller armed with what looks like Hasboro missiles.
