I've never heard of M.I.A before, but this story makes her sound like a silly person. She's some singer/political activist and she believes that violent videogames are teaching children to be violent and preparing them to go to war. She even said that, having seen real violence herself in Sri Lanka, she doesn't know whether her experiences are worse than these videogames or not. Seriously.
"I don't know which is worse. The fact that I saw it in my life has maybe given me lots of issues, but there's a whole generation of American kids seeing violence on their computer screens and then getting shipped off to Afghanistan," she claims. "They feel like they know the violence when they don't. Not having a proper understanding of violence, especially what it's like on the receiving end of it, just makes you interpret it wrong and makes inflicting violence easier."
Funny that she mentioned Afghanistan. By all accounts, there are some pretty violent bastards out in the Middle East, many of them very young males, and something tells me they didn't get their tendencies from videogames. I should think somebody claiming to have firsthand experience of violence would have the maturity to realize that videogames have never been needed to encourage inhumanity, and that it's something unfortunately hardwired into our basic evolutionary nature. Of course, it's just quicker to say that videogames are doing it, isn't it?
Blaming a media source for violence is an easy ticket. It's intellectually lazy to do so, and you'd think we could expect more from a political activist who has had traumatic experiences herself. Apparently this M.I.A character would rather keep that easy ticket though. Shame.
Never heard of MIA before, but that Destructoid article is terrible an puts in her mouth words which she never said . Even title of the article is biased and subjective; that should never happen in journalism.
What she says is that kids in 1st world countries are never shown the true face of violence. Films and video games are graphic in their depitction of violence, but they never show the consequences that follow it. Just think of it, in how many games have we been shown the impact of pointless violence? You can kill innocents in most of them, but penalties are based on gameplay mechanics; they don't have any emotional influence and do not affect the plot.
But it's not something that games are supposed to do and it seems obvious to me that she understands it. In fact, I feel that she's pointing out that news reports are tame in comparison. News reports rarely show the horrors of war, crime and abuse; we are given numbers and meaningless statistics.
It's funny how much rage has this misinterpreted quote produced. I've seen comments in which people state that they wish she had died in Sri-Lanka. Doesn't it kind of prove her point?
Sorry, for this rant but I am really disappointed with the state of games journalism; it's pure garbage.
That said... I can't stand her music style :poly142:
I'm just saying that anybody who thinks it's easier for a person to inflict violence on somebody because they've seen it in a movie or a videogame is a little out of touch with the reality of human nature. Then again she's kinda already proven how immature she can be about things before so it doesn't really surprise me.
Also, I could say you already like a pro violence musician.
“I wasn’t trying to be like Bono. He’s not from Africa — I’m from there. I’m tired of pop stars who say, ‘Give peace a chance.’ I’d rather say, ‘Give war a chance.’
...but this is the thread of awesomeness so here's a video of a cat with prosthetic feet.
This is kind of wrong, but I actually lol'd so many times:

Watch how a robot takes care of trash talking kids on Xbox Live
A trash talking kid, posing as a hacker when things didn't go his way, simply got owned by a "one-of-a-kind" XBL robot. I'm sure you've had your experience with such kids who threaten that they will hack your account unless you play by their rules, just watch and learn how to tackle these fake imbeciles.
Nothin outrageous in the vid, just Carrot Top showing his Vegas home and working out at the local Gold's.
Never liked his type of comedy, never thought he'd last as long but he now has his own Vegas show. If you haven't seen him since his skinny days, his physical transformation is pretty shocking to see.

Heh, it's spent brass, there's nothing dangerous about them.
I expected the prof to say something about it, but no one said anything.
It's actually pretty comfortable to use. the only downside is that your fingers smell like metal. I am gonna look into a way to get rid of it.
