I loved the cold tones you had before, made it seem superior and futuristic, a calm killer, he's in control (makes me think of the Tau saying "The patient hunter always gets it's prey).
But you will probably change my mind later on when I see a more finished piece;), its hard to judge so early in the texturing stage.
whatever you do.. blueish tentacles and red armor or switched.. not red red not blue blue
only my thoughts
keep going.. i want to fight with you on my side ..
I'm going to have to agree with what's already been said. I was really digging the cool colors, and I think the warm, firey tones are a bit overkill. Maybe you can change my mind, but if I were you, I'd maybe make the change a bit less drastic. Going from cool grays and blues to bright, warm reds and yellows was quite a different direction, and changes the character completely in my opinion.
agreed about the blue and gray tones, but your work pretty much speeks for itself so im interested in what your going to do with the red and yellow tones as well. Eiter way its going to be kick ass im sure.
Either way it will be excellent, but the original color scheme (greyish skin, blue glowies, black armor) seemed to fit the model much more than this new color scheme. This monster of your looks like some kind of hideous alien despot, some great Emperor or something. The blues and greys and blacks just seemed to make him look terrifying in his magnificence. This new color scheme does seem a bit overkill. He's already scary.
If you haven't already, you may want to try xNormal to render your AO from high to low. Since it is not loading the model for vieweing, it may use less RAM.
With that in mind, the red doesn't seem like such a bad idea, though a whole lot of variation from the body to the tips of the tentacles would probably work well.
ok so good adivce! I Think DreadReaper nailed it, its was feeling too royal, not enough shadow. I just felt like painting red! >:E but he'll look better with these tones - which is obviously very early in texturing
Edit: updated the screens because of bad compression :O
Not sure if I like the new colours more than the original ones. But it sure is better than the Red only version:) Looking forward to see this beast complete:)
Gorgeous work tim! I like the new colors better than the red and yellow. although I think the blue is a bit out of place. I would push it more to the purple color that you already have for the armor. A winner for sure, I've got to bring mine up to speed and quick!
great stuff! realy amazing! i would use the blue/teal colour you used in the very early concepts in stead of the one you have now, and i think what jaco said would also look cooler!
keep it up!
Also, another thing you may want to try to get your AO to bake is to run an Optimize modifier on your high model and then collapse the stack-- you will lose some detail, but not really that much, depedning on the settings you need.
careful spacemonkey--as I recall, you got into some late-period color noodling with your Dominance War entry from last year. But I have confidence you'll sort it all out. Photoshop color comping is your friend!
Dude, I only just now noticed that the limbs are made of tenticles. Awesome idea.
I see there is a bit of a mess at the top of the gloves tho where two of the tenticles blend together a bit. Some creative texture work should solve that tho.
Johny yeah sometimes a low chroma scheme cane be just what the character needed, but I hope he wont feel completely colourless when done. Lots of work to do yet
mvelasquez thanks well I've still really got all the work to do so things may change a little but i definately have the direction down now
Ninjas, yeah lots of good suggestions in this thread now I know i can get by without one but if I do get a render going its going to have to be in max to keep the trace distance consistancy
gauss, hey no always here with good advice! yeah this year I have decided now what i'm doing and I'm excited about getting the texture undeway I have a little skin tone scheme ready just need to implement those tones
Xaltar yeah theres a couple o normal map bloopers but I am systematically fixing them in photoshop
funny thing, my graphics card on my pc died tonight! I can only get the machine to run in safe mode now.. but fortunately I have a laptop so I ported my relevant files over.
But I'm happy with the direction now
Yes, thats looking pretty damn good! I'm eagerly awaiting the next update, this keeps on getting better and better.
Hope youre able to revive or replace that graphics card soon!
I'd really like to see some saturated color on the tentacles, where they're closest to the body. Maybe a dark red or orange. Something warm to help separate his flesh from his armor. I think it would help add depth to his character and species in general. They're not born in armor that perfectly matches their skin tone, are they? I imagine he's a Shadow by profession, not birth.
i agree about the 2-coloured tentacles, it would give some calm variations in colour aswell (ie, dont make the 2 colours pink and green). This way, you'd be able to tell that the arms/legs are bunched up tentacles (cuz they'll be a different colour where two tentacles meet if u c what im saying?)
Other than that, this colour choice is way better than the other one which was rightfully called "royal-looking".
Shaping up to be real awesome. Having this in the frame is enough of a 'beauty' shot, so that's one less thing u have to worry bout rendering .
The specular happenin on that large tentacle (i imagine it's similar on the smaller ones too) doesn't look right to me.
It's either: A) Too Powerful. or Needs finer refinement.
Visually, I'm loosing details in the tentacle due to the specular, which doesn't seem to conform to the scaley pattern.
haha.. i see we both take the black/gold colorscheme.. only that i use green-glow and you blue..
but its getting realy nice.. maybe try (if you don´t) to give the tentacles a root-to-end gradient in brightness or/and saturation .. just came in my mind when i see it .. don´t mind
You really need to work into the metal parts a matrix pattern in the spec map. Something like how carbon fiber car parts look. Having details only seen in light would be a lovely detail for a creature that lives in the shadows.
looks super-pretty but for my taste, there is not enough drama happening in the texturing. TGZ's suggestion is a good one - I'd also wonder, what happens if you knock the diffuse layer down to nearly black, and crank your specularity to insane degrees, and leave the self-illuminated bit?
Dude! RAD!
I'm assuming you've focused mainly on the skin so I won't have to tell you the metal/armour is looking a little plain at the moment. But I'm really digging the skin. Definitely a winner!
fan-fucking-tastic. the only thing i wanna say is that i think the spaces in-between the tentacles that make up his arms and legs could use just a little darkening, to make it more apparent that they're, well, bundled-up and repurposed tentacles. i think that's a great idea so you should really sell it.

I'm looking forward for more.

I love you.
I did take the liberty of refining your design to it's simplest and purest state. A true masterpiece if I do say so myself. http://www.thetextureguy.com/screenies/manitae.jpg
You may have to start from scratch if you want the same results, but as you can see I have already done most of the dirty work.
(plz don't take that as an insult)
lol, okay wait:
*clears throat*
HOLY [these words may appear sensored to you unless you are 46 years of age]-uking WOW!
yeah, thats about it really!
good luck! (not that u need it... lol)
