Umm. Last I checked you can still play the demo and then buy the game, even if the demo is released after the game. Its called waiting...
[/ QUOTE ]
Off topic, but I believe personally developers and publishers are shooting themselves in the foot if they wait until after the game is released. I can distinctly remember my experience with Quake 3. Getting to play a beta demo before the game was released definitely increased my interest where else I might have not picked it up after the release.
Now, the thing is. A: A person can make the judgement before release versus weeks or months later. So all the traffic and sales the game has for the first few weeks are increased slightly versus being spread out which on the business side, looks better to the publisher so they will be more willing to greenlight the developers next item.
On the player side, it allows a more equal ground for everyone to start at. Who here hasn't been a little anxious about getting into a multiplayer game that others have already been using for a bit? That steeper learning curve you have, and the "noob" comments.
Then another point in the player realm is you get a better idea of what types of people play the game. After the game is released, most people who liked it would have jumped into the full game. Which means not only wont the server crowd not be as dense, the players will be less an example of the people who play the game (for better or worse). Its hard to get a good judgement just how popular a game is from just these after the fact. (I always did like the demo versions of ut2k3 for allowing full client versions to play on demo servers).
to illusions: no, assualt is not just renamed with a few new features. Assualt is gone. Gone gone gone. Its a completely different game mode now. not that Im saying the new game mode will be bad, and in fact, I look forward to it the most, now that assault is gone, but the fact remains. Its a totally new gameplay mode.
Per128. I dont think we are talking bout the same thing. I was commenting about the tendency of developers not releasing playable demos before the game is released to help it gain momentum as per the past. Hmm, maybe I misunderstood Illusion context myself, and then you misunderstood mine.
Oh, I totally understand the flip side of the developers quandry of $$$ splitting some of the team to make the demo work, while worrying about having the game play too or far enough that could potentially turn all players off if not done right. I simply think the benefits out weigh the cost. I also dont mean months ahead. Weeks or even days is enough.
Like I said it was off topic, and not related to Epic or this thread (who DOES release demos before releasing the game [thus far]).

*Sigh* your right...Assault is gone. Too bad the users don't have any way to use some of the developers tools to port Assault over from UT2k4 to UT2k7. If only Unreal Editor, and the proper documentation, was available to the public...
The thing is, so many people say Assault is their favorite here, but going online it was the least played game type from my experience. The only really busy servers I saw with assault was the monster invasion type.
Per: The funniest bit in this thread is where it was claimed that the Sony demo with 2 characters running around a tiny subsection of a level was of a higher detail than the OnyxCoast E3 footage where 12 characters are onscreen with 6 vehicles and a large number of buildings, terrain and artefact models which were all generating or being impacted by multiple projectiles and particles )
Personally I didn't like assault the most, I think mostly because a lot of their levels have annoying meat grinder sections, I liked Onslaught mode a lot more because it was open-ended and had the same capture-points, destroy-base game play objective.
Elliotte, how about you resize the image you linked? I skipped the entire second page of this thread because your post is so wide everything is scrolling off the side of my screen. Muchas gracias.
ror you work/ed at epic so you are naturally bias, so I don't blame your comments, but to me the level complexity of the ps3 demos looks heavier, as does the shader usage. Maybe it was just presented better since it was a tech demo. The characters looked more poly-dense and SSS or fake SSS was obviously visibly used, it is'nt as obvious in the other media i've seen. The german engine walkthrough has higher detail versions of Malcom as well. I'm nto speaking for the artistically trained, i'm speaking for joe schmo who see's 'a' and gets 'b'.
no shit detail level drops with more characters, give me some fucking credit.
I don't need to be biased because I built most of that Sony Demo's assets and I built most of the E3 demo assets,
so what I am, is informed of the facts rather than speculating upon them.
Do you realise that you are arguing with the guy that made the assets you think are less detailed?
Doesn't arguing that you know better than I without having created the assets I did, strike you as an arguement that would make you appear more stupid rather than less stupid?
I just wanted to point out that there isn't a magic "make demo" button anywhere. There's an investment to make one, and a lot to consider about when and if to make that investment. The reason lots of devlopers release demos after the full game is out is not because they're too dumb to see it's almost always better to have a demo out before your game, but instead because they don't want to push back the release date of the game. Alternatives that don't disrupt development - like throwing more money at traditional marketing - win out and work will begin on the demo after the main game is done and relatively bug free.
I'd wager that one reason Epic is one of the places that puts out demos before the game's release is because they're a 'when it's done' shop and only locked into a release date a 2-3 months in advance. That probably makes it much easier to plan for demo development (though still far from free).
It looks great, I'll have to play it before I can chime in on the game play. The one thing that has always bugged me, is the damn bloom effect. Alittle bloom goes a long, LONG way. In the most recent screen shots/movies they seem to have gotten it under control.
For the gameplay I hope they keep the 2k feel. I liked moving faster than a tatical shooter/crawl. I hope they add more tactics but don't slow the game down to Rainbow6 or Ghost Recon speed just to apease the tactical crowd. Slowing down the combat in UT2k7 would only confuse the two IP identities (Gears of War & UT2k7). Which if they are lucky they can pander to both sides:
- Raw unbrightled carnarge with 10-20 1 man armies who just happen to be on the same team, trying to achieve the same goal.
AND
- A more squad based shooter that moves faster than moleasses but centers on your team working together.
I look forward to them both and hope Gears of War saves my X-boat Anchor 360 from next years fishing season. What I look forward to more, is the tools, oh sweet jesus the tools...

what a bunch of assholes. could it be simply that i was more impressed by one than the other? I did'nt hear any technical info from you ror, you never said the assets were identical, you just pushed buttons. congrats, i'm glad you made the assets, thanks for clearing things up and such, but you CAN do it without being a twat. deflate your head and contribute the info if you are'nt under nda or whatever.

I love how pretty much any thread here can kersplode without notice I'ma start one about what I like to spread on toast and see how long it takes to derail
Umm. Obviously you cared enough to come here and rag on a game for being visually low quality, that your only real experience with is through quicktime movies presented over the internet...
So now that you've explained yourself, we understand. We shall congratulate whoever did the editing for the PS3 internet movie for doing a better job than whoever did the PC version...
And I like butter and jelly on my toast...hoe bags...

Im in a pissy mood and I aint gonna take it. Your earlier quote of "give me some fucking credit" made me fucking laugh out loud this morning and nearly spit a mouthful of coffee all over my monitor. But I refrained from posting, but now I just cant seem to stop myself.
Give you some credit? Why? Why give you some credit? All I have ever ever seen from you is negativity. You argue about absolutely fucking nothing worth arguing about, contradict yourself constantly and usually make absolutely no sense at all whatsoever. Not one motherfucking piece of work have I ever seen you post. Not one. Ever. Yet you strut around this Game Art messageboard like you're the uber authority on everything, spurting out ridiculous, wild assumptions and claims like they're facts. Your arrogance is astounding.
In short, you really fucking piss me off, and I wish you would just go away.
a little off topic, but i seemed that when i suggested that ut2k7 should contain more strategic and tactical elements people jumped to the conclusion that it means "realistic" ...
i didnt mean another unreal "battlefield" or something of that sort ... but maybe push the envelope of the team deathmatch scenario a bit further to give the game a little more depth ... perhaps the way vehicles were introduced in 2k4.. i definitely didnt mean to say that they ought to slow down the pace of the game, or change the art style or change the arsenal ..
Epic is appealing to the majority of it's faithful consumers but seeing something new and intriguing would be cool too ..
Fuse: You'll probably be happy when more news of UT7's new features becomes public and it's explained more specifically how Onslaught has been expanded and refined.
It's not for me to announce you understand, but I'm sure someone will clarify things later on.
I too prefer the style in Gears of War, but could it not be that the speed at which UT2007 is playing makes it appear lower quality? When things are blazing about so fast it's quite hard to see stuff, whereas gears of war seems to be a slower pace, giving you more time to appreciate it.
I think another thing GoW has going for it is it is more consistent, it all fits together whereas UT is more mixed (androids, big guys in armour, aliens, a guy with a porn tache and beret) which is logical considering the natures of the games.
