@nomzod Depends on what you plan to use it for. Wouldn't be a bad choice if you need a PC dedicated to both CPU and GPU rendering, but probably a huge waste of money for a normal workstation.

About the specific parts; The Western Digital SN850 has been succeeded by the SN850X which is a little faster but should be about the same price. It's quite rare for anyone to get a dedicated internal sound card these days unless they have some specific need related to audio production, and for simply listening to music an external DAC+AMP will normally do a better job. Also, while the RTX 8000 does have a lot of VRAM it's actually a fairly old card having released back in 2019, a better choice for those that need tons of VRAM would be the "RTX 6000 Ada" (not the be confused with any non-"Ada" models) which is much closer to the 4090 in performance.

I'm almost 100% confident that you could build 4 7950/4090 boxes with that money and get your work done faster
what are you going to use it for ?

and yeah - I dont see the 5090 being particularly revolutionary.  faster yes but there's nothing really new there.
It's only got 28gb because the capacity is a function of the memory bus width - they're not doing it out of generosity.
The 50% bump in memory throughput is much more compelling than the increase in memory capacity because that's something you'll actually notice

Assuming it doesn't get too close enough to interfere with Quadro sales I wouldn't be surprised to see a 32gb version with a 512bit bus ship a year after launch

Two of those industry cards, and maya can render ray tracing in real time! Yeah, I've got a use for that.

Anyone using an ultrawide monitor? My second monitor took an oculus rift controller to the face and died. I'm considering replacing both monitors with an ultrawide, but not sure how that works and feels with sizing / snapping window panels. I like the ability to quickly snap windows to half, full and quarter size of each monitor in Windows 10. Also concerned about losing color accuracy as most utlrawides seem geared towards gaming (which I'll use it for, but not its primary function).
I ended up pulling the trigger on a Samsung 49" OLED during the Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals as it will fit my space well. I'll report back on the UX after I have some time with it for anyone else curious about going that route.

Also looking to upgrade my 2070 Super to something with at least 16GB VRAM (probably 4070 Ti Super or 4080, 4090 is out my budget at the moment ($1k). My question is this:

Should I upgrade the card now to get it before the proposed tariffs are installed in the US or wait until the 5xxx series is released? Seems like previous gen cards don't see much reduction in price with the release of a new series, but... Maybe? Any other graphics cards I should consider?

Finally, I'll also need to upgrade my power supply (something non-EVGA I guess -yikes) which will leave me with enough leftover components to build a second PC fairly cheaply. I may just donate it, but are there any other cool things I could do with it? (home automation, file server, other??)

@jStins The 5000 series will probably be in very short supply for about the first half year after release. So between tariffs, scalpers, and just general shortages, I'd say it's only worth waiting if you're willing to use bots to instantly buy a high end card the moment it's released in January before scalpers buy them all (tariffs shouldn't affect the cards released in January since they'll have already been shipped to the USA). Otherwise I'd just get what you need now and not worry about it.
