[UE4] Steampunk interior

Hey guys,

I am starting a new personal project which is going to be a mix of steampunk and the Harry Potter universe. I am going to use this thread in order to share my progress. Currently I am at the first steps of whiteboxing and gathering reference. Here are a couple of experiments in terms of scale inspired by Dumbledore's office:

I started work on one of the props. It is a steampunk chair which is going going on the second floor which will be some sort of steampunk observatory. I still haven't worked on a high poly and texturing so it is just the basic idea and generic tiling textures

That floor is, almost great but a little flat. I'd throw some polys at it to break it up.

Thanks for the feedback but I can't take any credit for the floor. It is a texture that comes with Unreal and I use it as a placeholder. You are right about breaking it up though.

Added some extra details and made an extremely quick and dirty texture test with the new Quixel suite (which is pretty awesome btw). Still no high poly

Quick question, you've sculpted a hp desk, so is this also all unique UV space for your bake and textures? It looks great, was just wondering what tex size you were using.

It is unique UV space but I am reusing it for many of the elements to gain resolution. For example the front ornament panels are unique and the side ones are just reusing that space. Same goes for everythting underneath the desk of course. The drawers are also using the same UVs. The current resolution is 2k and I'll probably keep it that way as this prop is in the center of the scene and I am not too bothered about it.

Ah okay, that makes sense. I tried spotting some re-used UV space and couldn't. Keep it going, these assets are looking great!

This looks really good, I don't know if you fixed it in a later version but at one place the direction of the grain of the wood texture didn't match the direction if the sculpted grain, pretty minor but it's an easy fix and worth doing.

I have to do a lot of work on the rest of the environment so I am freezing the desk for now and I'll revisit it for polishing later on.

This is such an interesting idea - I never would have thought of mixing steampunk with Harry Potter! Brilliant, though, and it looks like you're off to a wonderful start!

Are those shots of the low poly? I'd love to see a wireframe of that to get an idea of the geometry flow. Excellent work right there, good sir.

Thanks guys! It is the low poly that you see and here is a wireframe. Aside from the ornate panels it is quite simple.

I feel like you could've baked in that ornate detail. The geometry isn't doing anything to help with the silhouette and I think it would bake on perfectly fine. Great idea and a great start so far can't wait to see more!

Thanks Nick! That's a fair point but I thought I'll just go nuts with this one as it is a hero prop and it feels liberating to get away from the performance restrictions I live with every day in the office

Here is Here is another prop I am working on It is WIP and I need to improve the topology so this was more of a test but the general direction is there. It is going to be part of a puzzle in the room that will involve light and some crystal spheres that will bend it and point to locations on the globe which will unlock something.

That globe is something else. Did you come up with it on your own or is it from a concept? either way you truly delivered it.

Thanks, I appreciate it! There is no concept but I looked into many references. There is a steampunk octopus table I really liked and it inspired me but there is no such octopus holding a globe that I know of I am sure that there are many though and I just didn't dig deep enough but I didn't want to be influenced by reference too much.

Saw the globe asset in WAYWO, simply amazing.  Great eye for detail.  Going to be an incredible environment!
