I haven't finished New Vegas yet, after 120+ hrs I feel like I just finished 20% of the game, including extensions. And I have Witcher 3 waiting as well. I hope I can start with Fallout 4 in 2019, but really looking forward to it... I need more time for gaming...
The hardsurface work in this game is truly inspiring. Everything feels like it has weight and a purpose. I love the large vehicles derelict in the wasteland, I had to stop and admire this abandoned train engine for like 5 minutes before moving on, hats off to everyone involved!
Is there a way to launch Fallout 4 without the launch screen popup? It's a bit of an annoyance if you're playing on a TV with steam big picture mode. I would also like to know if there's a way to use a different fallout4prefs.ini when streaming to a steambox. I could change things on my main computer but I want to be able to switch back and forth between both.
Update: Ok, I figured out the launcher problem. Rename Fallout4Launcher.exe to something like setup.exe and rename Fallout4.exe to Fallout4Launcher.exe. SHAZAM, works like a charm.
Yeah everytime I throw a molotov it seems to explode in my face or hit my companion. Meanwhile I'm always getting #rekt by enemy molotovs.
Put more time in. Voiced main character still bugs me but this game is fantastic. Attention to detail is stunning, and some of the quests are really cool. The thing in The memory den was really rad. Also, admiring the art is really making me realize my own weaknesses as an artist. Being such a huge game, it seems like the artists made amazing use of the texture res they had. Lots of easily readable design choices, and precise details without ever going overboard. It's taking me a long time to get through because I have to stop and stare so much, haha.
Good lord, so far I played 58 hours and I still haven't beaten the main quest yet alone found all of the side quests and locations. At first I thought the map was going to be small compared to skyrim, but then I realized HOW DENSE this game is with great locations everywhere. The enemy ai still catches me off guard too!
Seriously, I had to walk past like 10 awesome looking areas of exploration to stay focused on one quest. And then what I thought was the building I was supposed to enter to search, turned out to be the wrong one with its very own quest and enemies! I think Bethesda really has outdone themselves on this one
I can't wait to unlock the ability to make the jetpack power armor, I saw videos of people jumping from rooftop to rooftop which is just great that they went with that direction versus the Oblivion/Skyrim limitations.
I also cannot freaking wait for the creation kit to come out to make some epic battle quests, apparently my pc could handle spawning 100 BoS Soldiers vs 100+ deathclaws without any real lag, although I'd probably keep it to 10-15 vs 30 at a time otherwise it would probably be a clusterball of hell to gameplay. Oh I think I'm going to get back into modding with this one!!!!!
I kind of wish for either a mod or an official patch though that would pass an audio pitch filter through the main character's voice. Think a mini pitch filter that a player could be adjusted on character creation or at a clinic, similar to how the Sims series let you adjust the tone to get a baritone or squeaky voice. I think that might address some more replayability, "making the character your own"/roleplay, and help with making the character sound a bit more gruffy or hysterical for additional playthroughs.
I've only finished half the main quest, have half the Steam achievements, and, I've played for only 60 hours. I'm actively avoiding continuing the main quest right now...
I was disappointed I hit my building items limit in my town. I wanted to see how large a structure I could build... and see how many levels you can gain if you focus on that at the start of your character (over 10 is the answer).
Absolutely adore the game, its everything I expected it to be and a whole lot more, I'm honestly a kid in the candystore ;o; . Can see this becoming the main hub I'll mod stuff for and I'll be playing this for the next 10 ish years to come just like I did a good 7 or something (whoa) with F3.
I can live with the lowres textures that pop up here and there and the occasional Dogmeat getting torpedo'd in the air, the only thing that bothers me while playing is the less than appealing lightning. Thers a white 'screen' filter over it most of the time killing contrast, it really doesn't do the game any good ... Top is without photoshop. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/31239405/F4/F4_PSed.png
Looks like Boris already made the main ENB, so that's looking promising for the future. And so many places have absolutely terrible terrible lightning that ranges from 'everything is so bright it destroys pixels' to having no real lightning so the place looks flat and weird. Strange because Skyrim did pretty alright in this regard, wasn't a thing I was expecting especially not since the level design is top notch from what I'v experienced. Tod wasn't kidding about detail, so much stuff to see everywhere !

Unfortunately you might need to check your monitors settings/calibration,
here is what the scopes look like for me, but then again your adjustment is just photoshop (which on my monitor looks really crushed/scopes show this to be true)
Top: is the default fallout screenshot, you can see whilst there is certainly clamping & clipping, the histogram is pretty weighted to shadows as well.
Bottom: is fairly obvious. heavy clamping in the shadows and some large clipping in the highlights.
The conclusion for me, from looking at the game, is that it is suffering from a lack of large scale ambient occlusion and detail in the shadows. That is aside from the issues with the lighting balance in general (tonemapping/exposure is a bit outta whack however the lighting model for the game looks like it is the same as skyrim, so I think tech is the big issue.)
Yeah that's the one thing I'm curious about. While the game by no means looks ugly and really is a treat, it is slightly strange that some interiors have really nice lighting and dynamic shadows going on whereas other sections are void of any shadowing at all. My guess is to keep the fps up, although surely one light per room wouldn't kill the framerate considering it's done in many other locations that have scenes with more complexity. Other than optimization, I guess maybe a different artist lit the area or shadows were added in to certain light entities later, such as how the ceiling fan a player can place has dynamic shadows cast from it where as the standard lightbulb doesn't. I'd also factor in that a ceiling fan would be used less often than the generic lightbulb entity, hence why it had shadows tied to its lightsource. And then there's the this is a hallway, let's not spend too much production time lighting it reason
I wonder if it would be as simple as altering the lights to have shadows enabled in a checkbox when the creation kit comes out, as if memory serves me correctly bethesda usually made prefabbed lighting settings that they placed everywhere in order to keep things relatively in relation to each other, so altering one technically should alter all of its instances.
And yes, the level design has totally improved since Fallout 3 and Skyrim
Quick, potentially dumb question: I bought the PC retail version of the game. Does anyone have any idea where the Steam key is supposed to be? Is there a manual that's missing from my box or something?
Mcgreed is correct, I couldn't remember what is was on the back of, but it was the survival guide, it's so thin that it feels like a piece of paper. I didn't really inspect what the disk accompanied, I found the key on the back and installed right away.

I'll admit the PS edit is by far perfect, I think I was trying to explain exactly what you said but in newb language, still learning a lot each day here ! thank you for the proper terms, this is why I love this place
I seeee, really hope this gets some kinda fix soon ...
Dang, I've had way more crazy epic battles in this game than any prior Bethesda titles. In the early Corvega raider fight I activated a protectron and everything went nuts, explosions everywhere! I was running through the manufacturing floor like Rambo. Crazy thing is, that seemed to have been a random occurrence, I've talked to friends who had a totally different experience in that fight.
I'm about ... 80 hrs in, I believe. And the game is pretty fun to play. As others mention, the great parts are really great. Not to say it's without flaws, though.
- Settlement and Settlers are .... like last min addition. - Dialogue Options are most of the time not real options. It's either Yes, No, or 'I want my companion to like me more'. - Enemies vs You battle is ... one sided. You're the one with all the perks. (pretty overpowered), while they are the ones with (unlimited ?) weapons. Your goal is to take less damage. Their goal is to deal the most damage before they die. - Gun modding/customizing is awesome. So many options... along the way. But eventually you will reach the same point. It's like a tree with many branches... but they all merge together into a single point at the highest tip. - Armor modding is .... opposite. There are many branches, and you want them all, but you can only pick one. (because carry multiple armor set isn't practical. ) So you pick one upgrade you like the most, and stick with it. - Companions AI is Skyrim's Lynda blocking your entrance/exit all over again. They are slow to react to threat, but then turn around and kill it in seconds. (I want to kill em myself, while you help... a bit). And they trigger traps and are useless in Sneaking mode.
I concur on the amount of crazy epic battles. About 80-90 hours in so far and everynow and then I still get a few surprises in the battles. (Actually just came across a completely new enemy that wasn't part of a quest!)
I had a very intense battle in another citylike district. Basically a npc caravan with two badass escorts decided to roll through gunner territory, which was also where a Brotherhood of Steel Patrol decided to land, which was also where a few super mutants were chilling nearby and the occasional ghouls. Annnnd one npc was carrying a fatman. That, was 30 Minutes of wonderful CHAOS. Those caravan guards were pretty badass though, saying the best one liners as they took cover blasting people in the face with their sawed-offs Mad Max style. The whole thing might not of happened considering I think the caravans just randomly travel across the wastelands.
I definitely enjoy it whenever I stumble across an area where 3 different enemy types hate each other as well
i am playing for about 11 hours, reached diamond city and doing paint mission. This is game is so huge, so many things to do. Love this game but they should increase the weight cap .
Yeah the first thing I do in any Bethesda game is get all the perks/skills to carry more stuff, or I'm sure my OCD / spoon-collecting-fetish will ruin the game for me. Just hit level 37, loving it so far, there's a lot of things that I could criticize, but in the end there's just so much cool stuff, so who cares.
Yeah, the weight cap really got to me at the point where I thought I would bring along a companion...BAM, gone was my lone walker perk.... But hell if I'm gonna cheat to get it upped, so now I have adjusted my companions armor with deep pockets and my exo with extra strength. I also increased the difficulty as well, got too easy in the fight and while I love my magical "Here is your head, tada, now your heads gone" rifle skill, it got a bit too easy. What I really love is that everything actually have a use, apart from aesthetic, which is great. Though it does conflict with old habits when you go "WOHOOO, glue!" instead of the weapon you picked up.
There is a real annoying thing though, when I changed the key assignments, it doesn't change it everywhere. For example I changed interaction from E to F, as I'm used to using that, and now half the actions is using F and the other half is using E. :P
@McGreed I think you can bring your Dog along and it wouldn't negate your Lone Wanderer perks.
Yeah I done that before, just thought I'll try something different, and see if I could unlock the perks for them. Btw, does Dogmeat have any perk? Because he is a dog he pretty much loves you already.
Liking the game but hating the faux-RPG direction the Fallout franchise is going. All the dialogue choice are starting to feel a bit arbitrary at this point as it doesnt seem that whatever I say makes ANY impact whatsoever, the only influence you have is what faction you side with and that's about all the impact you can make on the story. It's not like you can actually change the direction the faction is going, you're either helping it become the dominating faction or not. So in the end I end up pressing the triangle button everytime during conversations just to at least hear some of the reasoning of some of the characters.
They really did drop the ball on creating a meaningful set of decisions and factions like they had in New Vegas. Do you get the boomers to help you? Do you join one of three sides? Which faction do you align yourself with to get into the strip to begin with? etc. etc... New Vegas had the superior plot of all 3 Bethesda Fallout games by MILES. It was disappointing to see 4 drop the ball so hard on that point. Most of the other systems are improvements I believe... though I was sad to see Power Armor so "optional" even for a character built for it. More a pain to use than a feature.
To be fair, Fallout 4 is a pretty substantial step up in terms of campaign quality when compared to either Fallout 3 or the more recent Elder Scrolls games. It's still not great, but credit where it's due.
@Steve SchulzeApparently you missed Fallout: New Vegas? Which I maintain as above, plot wise, was miles ahead of both 3 and 4. Again, just my personal opinion. 4's campaign is better than 3s I suppose, in that at least there's some choices. The dialogue is worse though due to the dialogue system. 3 had Three-Dog though... and there's no topping that it seems.
Is anybody playing with a HD 7970 with the latest crimson drivers(hotfix one). If yes then do you have any FPS drops or artifacts like screen tearing, horzontal/vertical lines etc.
I personally loved the twists towards the end and beat the main quest at 111 hours, no joke! I'm now playing through again and this time am looking for more of the sidequests before getting caught up in the story. There appears to be a surprising number of quests and locations that I did miss even when I thought I saw it all. My only minus point is I kind of miss the different branches for a lot of the side quests in Fallout 3 and moreso in New Vegas, but the game as a whole is great. I just wish there was something like the slaver faction from Fallout 3 so I can play as a truly evil character the second time around.
Can't wait for the freaking GECK so I can mod it to heeeeell
Wrapped it up this week. Overall I loved the game, but near the end I hit some pretty nasty bugs. Turns out the pacify ability breaks a lot of content if it is set to trigger on the death of specific enemies. Also one of my helmet mods on my power suit actually stopped one of the last steps of my crit path plot from spawning. Whoops! But given the size of the game and how much time I spent in it, I felt like I got more then my money's worth out of it.
I loved the followers and they provided motivation for my to keep questing (I wanted to get to know these guys better). I felt that the density of the content was better then Skyrim. It chained well together and you rarely had long stretches without something either visually interesting or some gameplay element to interact with.
Hancock, on the other hand, did not survive the end of my play session as well as I did...

It was still sealed in plastic when I got it, so it's evidently a packaging error.

I swear I can't talk about this game with people, because it devolves into a mess of Political debate, and what it means for Player Choice.
What a great game!
I 100% agree with this article (which most people I spoke to felt was hogwash):
