so stoked for this, Just ordered the Uncharted 4 art book, probably gonna have to grab a ps4 soon to dive into this game. Big up to all the artists who worked on it, looks like its one hell of an end product. Looking forward to seeing portfolio work and breakdowns
What kind of technique that ND use for the shadow in the water? it seems volumetric like the water have an actual volume. the water not volumetric right???
it look like double shadow, and it is just softer low res shadow underwater
Nah it is more complex than that it is kind of like volumetric I am not tech code savvy enough to say what it is, but looks amazing in deeper water areas.
looks dang pretty... but I. m banning myself to see any uncharted related screenshot , because im going to play it myself in july ( afraid of spoiler, based on the statue style T_T ) *and i saw some of it .. T_T....
I finished the game, this weekend, and I'm looking forward to playing through it again. A+ as usual. Beautiful game, though I still feel like something is 'off' about the character appearances, it still has amazing details. I've been breaking up my time, by playing the Multiplayer too, and enjoying it. I'd like to see a few things tweaked, but overall fun.
It's nice to enjoy a game that isn't filled with bugs/issues. I've found very few 'tiny' issues, but nothing breaking, or annoying. I know others have had a few issues, but overall, a great launch

Do you think they're uncanny or something? Uncharted 4 is one of the rare aiming for grounded visuals in which I didnt find characters soulless or creepy. I mean, compare it with Quantum Break (which is also visually stunning) and you can aknowledge the gap by yourself.
Though, I really wish more AAA talented studios like ND could focus on stylized games again like Jak and Daxter, bringing Pixar like visuals into games.
We had Ratchet this year but I truly wish to see more.
It's hard to place a finger on what I feel is off about the characters. I'm not sure if it's a proportion issue, lighting, if the movement is to stiff, or something else, but everything looks amazing/real, until the character enters the scene. I have noticed a mismatch of the player shadow, that makes him look like he's floating above the ground (just barely). Even my wife was in awe, at a seen, until Nathan entered the scene. She thought it was real, until the character broke that realism.
I, by no means, intend to sound like I'm insulting it, because I loved the game, and it's still beyond the visuals of most games out there. If you compare it to the Division though, I feel like the Division's characters fit into the environment a bit better; especially particle effects at the feet, when walking in dust, or snow.
Interesting, I thought that Uncharted was really the first time characters felt like actual people and not video game characters. Animation in the Division is great and the quality of the art is top notch but the characters just look like generic video game characters, there is no emotion, barely any facial expression, the eyes are static, and ironically that makes us much more inclined to forgive unrealistic behaviors. I am not criticizing the Division specifically because these are flaws that we find in almost every game.
I feel like characters in Uncharted, especially during cutscenes, are so close to "feeling real" that the slightest unnatural movement or glitch can indeed break the spell. It's like they are walking on a tightrope above the uncanny valley and can fall at any time.
Then again, even blockbuster movies nowadays are struggling to reproduce CGI faces that don't look completely off. The Uncharted characters look much more alive to me than Paul Walker in Furious 7 or young Jeff Bridges in Tron Legacy.
I think the characters felt good, especially the subtle facial movements. Riffing off jerc, even Jeff Bridges facial movements in Tron Legacy didn't feel as nuanced as they did for Drake, and that's probably cause the animators go in and hand key on top of the mo cap information. What I thought was awesome was how Drakes physical weight felt grounded. His chest/pectorals felt like he's been climbing those cliffs for a real long time haha. and I wouldn't want to be want to be punched by him. I think you can really feel the weight during the cut scenes where he's writing down stuff in his journal or when he has that bowl he's eating out of in the beginning.

I agree. I was referring more to the lighting, player shadows, and particles as the feet interacted with the ground. I think the Division's characters look good, but yeah, the faces look dead, and my character's face looks nothing like it did in the character creator.
I love the movement of Uncharted's characters, especially the 'standby' mode, when you don't move your player for a bit. I do feel, 'at times' the arm movements felt a bit robotic, but most of the time it's good. I restarted the campaign on 'crushing', last night, and I was trying to pinpoint it more. I think the eyes are part of what isn't selling me; especially Nathan as a child. Again, I don't mean to sound overly critical. In the end, it is a video game, and I think it looks great overall. I'm just trying to clarify what I meant about them feeling 'off'
How the fuck do I get rid of this quote field. This forum is a mess...
Anyway REANIMATE, yes absolutely. Where would be a good place to host them?
When you're in the 'quoted' area, the 'quote' will be highlighted. Just select it again, and it removes the quote formatting. I just realized it today, when I was trying to exit a quote box.... which is impossible, if you attempt to edit the quoted text, before you type your response

I finished Uncharted 4 last night and no words can come to mind the number of thoughts, feelings, etc. that washed over me when I saw the last screen fade to black. I don't think I've had a video game affect me like that, ever. I think the fact ND decided the fourth title was going to be the last one, it had some finality to it.
I am an aspiring environment artist and I was blown away by what Naughty Dog put together. @rogelio and the rest of the environment artists did an AMAZING job. In my eyes, everyone at ND did an amazing job. Thank you for bringing Uncharted to Playstation consoles. I'm not sure how many ND's are here in the forums, thank you for this. I CANNOT wait for the next new IP that comes to store shelves. I could go on and on. Good luck to everyone on your next project.
Finished the game the other day! So good! The composition and leading the player is done brilliantly, and shouldn't be overlooked. If you played this game with a super stylized, or even a flat-shaded, aesthetic the game would still look amazing because of the composition and scale I think.
The experience feels so complete aswell! The gameplay, aesthetic and story is so cohesive and great! It's the complete package for sure. The attention to detail is just spectacular, when it comes to the technical graphics and everything ofcourse, but also the camera mode and everything. The winch aswell, made me giggle from excitement, haha, ok I'm rambling at this point. Great game!
My only gripe, which is a super superficial one, is that it's hard to buy the characters as moral and real when they're these mass murdering douchebags. Just mowing down hundreds of people, I think Last of Us kind of solved this clash between story and gameplay, but Uncharted has always been more of a Indiana Jones/Power fantasy than Last of Us was I think. So whatever. xD
My God! I just downloaded everything, i really love the tech stuff (wires etc...) and that's usually the first things that get taken down. I'll add this to the couple hundred screenshots I took in game myself
god daaaaaaaaaamn. amazing work everywhere you look. sensation overload. Love how lots of enviro guys show small breakdown samples, anyone starting out should look at them as proof you really do not need to be afraid of adding polygons for detail anymore these days. mind boggling work, I am almost afraid to guess how many overtime hours went into this.
Hot Damn. . . . . thanks for images guys, all of those absolutely going into my references folder. . . I'm just hoping that our IT guys doesn't find out who's using most bandwith today

I think I figured out what you mean. About how the characters sticks out from the environment and it has to be due to the way they are shaded and lighted.
However, the moment characters gets in, they kinda break a little bit the illusion since they're not affected by light the same way as the environment do.
Exactly Blond, I really do think it's mostly the lighting/shadows. As we've clearly seen, in the art dump, the characters are amazing looking. The lighting, for the environment, is spot on, but once the character enters the scene, it instantly looks like a video game

I don't know if that is such a bad thing though. I'm not sure whether it is intentional, but you want the characters to stand out somewhat, just like how they highlight edges you can climb.

Here's a screencap of one of the prettiest place in the game:

Looking neat as always but it seems like there's alot of baked information in there, like the GI essentially...
