Even though I have not really played Bioshock I have been working on a base mesh of a Brute for the past 2 days. I am still tweaking before I go into Zbrush. Here is just a basic texture version.
Here's what I've been messing with for the past few days:
Really hoping to get around to texturing it. It kind of feels BioShock to me, but I think some gold details and what not would really help it... Might not get it textured in time though.
I really like the presentation here it really gives it that extra ooomph . Although the grey makes it looks a little flat, maybe experiment with adding a little shadow?
Perhaps it's just me, but I think your sculpts all tend to have similar features; they're very gaunt, sharp features, squinty eyes, heavy eye brows and prominent cheek bones; they've all got a default 'pose' that looks like they're concentrating very hard. I've got to admit, that sharpness is quite refreshing on your females, and even in the men, where gaunt isn't too uncommon, I like how you push it far enough to become realistic, but I do think you're being needlessly narrow with your range of characters. 0,02.
Yea I see what you are saying on the expression front, I just like doing that smouldering expression in personal work as it adds alot of character as opposed to the bland and gormless production face haha, and these are only sculpts so thought it ok. I think the main problem is I've chosen similar themes and reference over the past few models. It's very 20s dapper gentlemen at the moment. Like the heavy brow, defined cheek bones, laughing lines and set lids, they are all aspects of the character I have consciously chosen so I don't feel bad about it, just a shame I have done them in a row. Like josh brolin, that's just his face, dishonoured guy that's the art style and booker is in line with the concept art.
I think the facial features are all dissimilar enough to work on their own merits but I can see the similarities in points but they are just different enough to work IMO. My females and male characters I try to push the anatomy alot to push the realism and stay away from the boring cheerleader faces that alot of people do. I like showing the underlying anatomy and bone structure that help add solidity to the sculpt. That pinched brow is just something I like to do in these as they aren't for production and works well in drawing people in and telling a story without saying anything. Will try something different though
But yea I 100% see what you are saying and will take it on board on the next one.
BobtheGreatIIthat is really something ! great work !
BhushanArekarthat pretty nice work ! just that cloth of the little sister confuses me a bit about her proportion !
here is my super late entry for Female Lead theme ! i wanted to learn a bit more about hard surface sculpting so decided to make Kerrigan Dezerged from Starcraft with that fantastic suit ! i was a bit lazy to do retopologize her cloth so her body and cloth are same mesh !
Lots of great work are here. branduarte:love this and your other work also:) crazyfool:Eyes speaks:) alifarsangi:Thanks for critiques and nice start:) Kot_Leopold:Nice work
Apologies for being late with the theme, again, if you are still working on previous themes feel free to post them up still hopefully get some time to finish my booker over Easter weekend

Great stuff everyone
Could anybody elaborate?
I'm guessing this is about characters like Mario and Sonic?
Hmmm, maybe reducing subject range could help? For example if its Bioshock- how about everyone make their own version/vision of Big Daddy. Or if its Gibli- make Yubaba.
Tighter frames, i mean.
Agreed with conte. The issue here is not that people are burnt out (if we were, waywo would be deserted), but because some of the themes are way too broad to even pick and start something aka it's easy to get lost. Just compare the number of results for broad themes versus specific ones. Further defining a theme will yield more people joining in and contributing.
Except not all of us can sculpt a character, so you could do an option like that, but would also have to include something for those of us who enjoy hard surface modeling.
Gah, I have been following this and feeling bad about not contributing. We shouldn't let it die. Come up with a great theme and advertise in Waywo to bring more people in again perhaps?
Maybe extend the themes to 1.5 weeks or switch the changeover day to Monday. Usually I have to figure out what I want to do in the first few days and by then I've missed the weekend and have little time during the week.
More specific topics and more time sounds like a good idea. I joined just recently so that I could join on the art jams, I'd hate to see it end before I even got started.
Cheers guys, so I'm thinking if Mondays are the new start day (I'm finding it difficult to find time in the week anyway) if we make it 2 weeks and like people say limit the themes a bit more?
I knew as soon as escape was announced this would die a little haha but I've had alot of fun so I'm not upset haha. I will stick with it til the end of the themes anyway and then maybe someone else can take over or we let it fade out into the sunset
Damn man!
I'm gonna nitpick cause that's just too awesome.
The buttons on the right of his vest don't have corresponding holes on the left, and would end up going through the pocket if they did. The gun holster seems a bit too narrow to fit any of the handguns Booker uses, maybe just 50% wider to look like it could at least hold the luger he starts with. The wrinkles at the bottom of his shirt are cutting into his pants a wee little bit. Uhm... oh yeah I hate you;)
hello, so a few changes for the art jam, gonna try out some new things to make it a bit easier for people and hopefully get some more peeps turning up. The themes are gonna change every 2 weeks and now on a monday instead of a friday so you can have the weekends to finish stuff up a bit more. Im gonna try and bring the themes in a touch so they are not so free and will hopefully help people out a bit more.
so new theme time.... STREET FIGHTER
If you have stuff for the old themes then feel free to pop them up
definitly going to take some time to doodle for this theme. Love street fighters! I hope I can translate the badassness of the characters tho. I'm thinking Garuda! Can't wait to see how you bring it with your style crazy
Awesome, I was thinking of doing a Street Fighter character for the gaming icons theme anyway, I guess now I have no excuse to not get that ball rolling

Here's my contribution for the cartoon, female lead and bioshock themes.
Samurai Jack for the cartoon, Motoko from Ghost in the Shell for the female lead, and little sister, mixed with Alma flavour for Bioshock.
Finally caught up with the current theme of the week :poly136:
Could anybody elaborate?

Perhaps go for something similar to gameartisans mini-challenges?
