I was hoping someone would figure out that the lighting was a joke, I just turned on Unlit mode in UDK.
And I can see andys pictures. Ive had that problem too, sometimes people wont see some of my uploaded pictures, but others can. Who knows what causes it.
@andy - One piece of crit, the floor is too green. When i look at your pictures, my eyes are quickly drawn to the green floor first.
I was hoping it was a joke, but I wasn't too sure;) I actually started saying, "this is a joke right", but if you were serious everyone would think I was being a douche.
I haven't post in a while, I have been working all my jobs and trying to do my personal work on the side. I picked on this environment art challenge on the 31st of December. I have been trying to put at least 3 to 4 hours a night after i get from work on it. It seems to be coming along nicely. I am trying to finish this up pretty fast so I can prepare for the next challenge. I have been tracking my self weekly and I promise to post my process when I finish the environment. But here is where I am at right now.
Bit of an update. Hope I can find time to finish this by the end of the month. There's a lot to be cleaned up, still working on the wood texture...
C&C welcome!
Add some color to your lights to give the environment some character. If you look at the concept you would see an orange tent from the lighting. Having a warm light with a cool make your environment pop just a little bit more.
Finally something, I like.. Almost done with the lighting. Pretty much happy with it for now, will model few more props, change some textures... And I'd probably call it completed.
Is it still dark ?? LOL,... why do I see it soo bright
for the wall, I increased the normal map strength by multiplying and also used Bump map to increase the depth. This much I felt is enough for the walls .
You know, it could possibly be the screen. I have a LCD and LED and i swapped my browser from one to the other, and the LED shows your scene alot brighter while the LCD is darker. I guess it depends on what type of monitor people have.
yeah, that could be the cause, mine is LED monitor and in laptop. In laptop it shows overly bright, so was thinking to darken it abit untill I listened to you guys.
@RockGuy: lol, no way I can hate you for that... But that the max bump, i can get it.. But it could have been due to the model itself. ie. I dont have larger spacing betwwen the bricks.. But happy with it now... maybe will play with lighting lil later.

You need to add mood lighting, like in the concept, and warm the scene, it's very cold and doesn't match it.
Some small updates, added toolstand and tools (tilables) , a shovel , a broom , some bottles , and lockers , the second image its somewhat dark I will fixed in the morning.
Got to this on the 20th of Jan. Still got alot of it done. Probably gonna be a stretch to get it done in time. Otherwise its been a good learning curve. Only got introduced to UDK at the end of last year.
Things i need to do:
. Rebake the pipes AO and Normals. They stuffed up somehow
. Add normals to most of the textures.
. Finish of some more of the assets
@RockGuy: going good man, you have populated the room quite well... and I like those lockers, good work.
There is something I feel not good in my opinion,
-The floor tile, I think its over detailed and bumpy[unless its a newly building underconstruction]
-you wall looks good, but in closeup[Image 2] , I can see lots of straight horizontal and vertical lines. Though its not there in far snaps
-Door way too green ??? Maybe you shld try lil de-saturation in the whole scene
floor tile : mmmmm I wanted to have more bump because it looked very plane , but yeah it does looks very noisy , I will lowered a few numbers to make it cleaner.
wall : It took like 10 min to see what were you saying , and then bam! , yepp theres some wierd lines between each brick , tahnks man I gues is also product of the extra bump.
the door : mmm I will do some test with diferent values ,and see if looks better
Since I got comments that the scene is still dark and cold and not matches with the concept. Did a few tweak on the environment setting. I learned about this Color Grading/Color lookUp table feature of UDK and I must say, I AM IMPRESSED.. We could easily change the overall look in less time. I'll start the other props soon now. For now this is the update.
Here's my WIP so far. Not sure if I'll finish any time soon, but I like these noob challenges. They're great for practicing and keeping the ole skills up to date.

Thx AlexCatMasterSupreme, rockguy and ChrisPerr for the comments. Here's another update. I only have a few small props, some dust particle fx, and some cleanup work left to do.
Oooo partilces sounds cool I will like to see that.
edit. wait can you do that with fog materials or is cascade by law?
edit again. I mean the dust.
You can do this with a material and the dust particles can be animated along a simple cone mesh. It's probably cheaper to do it with a material as long as the instruction count is reasonable.
Just a general suggestion on the floor tiles for anyone that made them match the concept, floor tiles generally only go up to about 12in x 12in or 30cm x 30cm, so it might be more realistic to make them smaller in the scene, but of course then it wouldn't match the concept, you can always bump up the tiling in udk and see how that looks before deciding to change it, but they just look too big to me.
Here's my progress. Its going to come down to the wire I think...
I have some weird shadows going on, but I'm not worried about it since it's still in Maya. I might have some late nights coming up Man, I wish I had more time to work on this...
Really pleased with how the staircase has come out. Decided to get most of the modelling out of the way so all thts left is texturing (including redo's, that concrete is horrible i know). I'm not going to get near finishing this and will keep working on it after the end of this month.
been following this thread for a couple of weeks now as I was really keen on joining in after seeing the concept. Sadly I only saw it a couple weeks in, so that along with working a lot over xmas meant that I couldn't attempt it.
Still it's very interesting to see the various paths people have taken in order to achieve what they have. I have learned so much from just reading all your posts, some really awesome stuff out there. Keep up the good work

Any chance at all you could post a break down of your modular pieces and textures? This is awesome, I want you knowledge
@Rockguy: Now you gonna hate me but , though all props and lighting looks fine... I still can't hold my eye in something... I feel the whole pic is so distracting[maybe just to me]. My eye keep rolling in between your left and right bulb... Not sure, if you understood what I meant.... [Just my personal opinion]
Here is mine, I thought this would be the final but I realized I am missing shadows in few props for some reason. I'll check it tonight, But I am almost done with it.
hey guys, it makes me sad to say that i wont finish this in time. But i really really do want to finish this either way. So if i tend to post some pictures now and then. please do push me in the right direction.
today i started to redo my blockout and finished it. tomorrow i'll try to begin with some HP stuff and hopefully, bake and UVW. some stuff.
My biggest con is the texturing part, which i have to overcome.
It's all well and good showing texture breakdowns but the thing i'm most interested in is lighting breakdowns. Some really nice lighting going on in here
Along with this , I'd like to thank AlexCatMasterSupreme, rockguy ,ZeroBigSis and everyone for commenting, helping and pushing me further.
Again thanks and congratulation to AlexCatMasterSupreme, for making this challenge
In this project,
-learned sculpting wood
-learned texturing better
-learned UDK [importing,lighting,post processing,lightmass]
-couldn't do but learned need to manage time properly [not just get stucked in small detail for long time]
WWOOOOW man !!! Learned so many thing in 1 month hmm, proud of myself hehe

Thought I could use the room for some lighting tests, may more may not texture it. This is what I got done tonight after werk
C&C welcome!
It's a bit dark...
What you guys think ?
Also did you ever find what was happening with your walls?
for the wall, I increased the normal map strength by multiplying and also used Bump map to increase the depth. This much I felt is enough for the walls .
Also please dont hate me , but in closeup the walls still look like wallpaper , far look good though.

Progress, ill never make the deadline, but good scene and will be super fun to light which is the best part!

Also rock guy, your walls look a LOT more detailed than your pillars.

thanks for the crits.
definitely not noob level atall
And Klash, as I said I am really liking what you did with the last challenge.
And cmtanko looks great man! You totally got it!
I finally make the celling less dark but a the cost of looking too saturated , Im still trying to fix that.
Also fixed some problems pointed by cmtanko and AlexCatMasterSupreme, such as the quality of the pillars and the bump on the walls.
Thanks for the feedback , will continue to work on the scene after a liittle break.
And also cmtanko , SeveredSon your scenes looks really great, cant wait to see the final product.
Nice lighting!
progress on to unwrapping
I love your textures. They are easy on the eyes.

Also filling the other room with objects
No problem Mathew O. I'll post a breakdown before the end of the week.
