Interesting, he also mentions that this isn't a serious review yet ( which will be provided as the test embargo is lifted ), and that he was apparently cursed by a witch.
Ha, I thought the same. It's not that long. If you watch and don't listen then you'll just see a really small amount of one fairly unexciting environment that hasn't been seen before. There's one thing that Peter says that's a tiny bit spoily, but that's all. Mostly it's just Peter waxing romantic at the Souls series
I've been going through dark souls 1 lately and I'm so impressed by From. Ive never seen such imaginative and technically impressive environments, and Its all so connected and detailed! I've been trying to find information on what they're design process is, do you guys know if such information is out there, like whitepapers or something? It would be great to have some insight into the workflow of such an amazing studio
woah thanks for that info guys! erichWK that map viewer is awesome! it makes me wonder how do you even begin to author meshes like that?! and that was a great video habboi, its nice to get a glimpse of their sweet wierd arcane tech
The level design / world design of Dark Souls really is incredible. Combined with the atmosphere and challenge it made exploration so fresh and fun compared with other games.
I hope that multiplayer will be more effectively integrated into DS2 than it was in Dark Souls. Extremely difficult to connect with my friends.
Right so basically they want to retain the sense of loneliness that was present in the other two games but you may be pleased to know there's two items to make it easier.
One ring lets you use voice chat with another person in your instance and another lets you choose a deity out of 9. Now if you and your friend are both using that ring and have the same deity then it's easier to connect together.
Seems kind of unfair to see the PC version coming out so much later. I recall the devs stating that the PC was going to be the leading platform this time around, as opposed to DS1 in which it obviously wasn't. We're going to get "better textures and better framerate options" but aren't those two things expected of PC games by now?
Either way, as long as it doesn't end up being the trash that DS1 was at launch then I'll be happy. March seems like a pretty great month for gaming anyway, tons of awesome games have been released that I haven't even had the time to start yet, and there is some awesome stuff I've been waiting for coming out at the end of March as well.
Good. Let the console peasants test game and deal with bugs, so PC master race will get better game.
In my experience PC games have always had nicer graphics, I just prefer console so I don't have to work/play games on the same machine throughout the day, nice to take a break and kick back in a different setting
Hah console peasants...I admit I love PC gaming a lot more now but the Soul series has always had the best community on PS3 though I "may" consider buying PC later down the line but for now I "MUST" experience it as soon as possible.
This series literally ruined gaming for me, it's just everything I look for in a game.
I'll probably be waiting for the PC version. I really want to play it but lately I have had hardly any free time. I've got a library of Steam sale games I haven't even played so this might be waiting for some time. It looks fantastic though
I played for about 5 hours last night... err, this morning. I'm loving it so far.
Holy crap, this game is tough so far. As a guy who can totally breeze through demon's souls and dark souls I'm happy they've managed to throw some curve balls to make it challenging for Souls veterans and newcomers as well. The main struggle for me right now is healing. I got up to two uses of estus flask, but that's still woefully inadequate, and I was eating life gems like candy in the beginning because I heard they were common, but they now seem kinda scarce. In Dark Souls I would take some damage here and there and not sweat it, now I'm going extra slow trying to take no damage at all.
I've run into some serious WTF moments too, there are some interesting characters and creatures.
Did anyone else see that
weird floating guy with the shiny shield that got dropped off by a crow on a rooftop? He freaked me out so I ran anyway, and he hasn't spawned again.
Shin I'm glad you're having such a hard time with it was kinda concerned they'd be dumbing down the difficulty a bit, good to hear it's still pretty unforgiving.
A decent review. Also people on Neogaf have noticed lighting was severely tuned down for consoles but eh as long as it runs great I don't care. Though here it is:
3rd shot down: "Here comes the sun, here comes the sun and I say, its alriiight"
For a second I read the enemy's name in the last shot as 'The Peruser' - just an NPC that walks up to you and examines you for ages, scratching his chin thoughtfully
Oh that guy in the .gif is the one I mentioned in my post, I guess I will encounter him again later. I've only done two boss fights and can't beat either currently, but they're in a more difficult area. One of them is
a dragonslayer, looks like ornstein.
.
Also, I'm playing on 360, and while a lot of assets don't hold up to scrutiny (as people have noted from the screenshots) honestly it still looks quite good. Lighting is a big step up, but it's the overall art direction and cool environments that really sell it.
Soul of the mind, key to life's ether. Soul of the lost, withdrawn from its vessel. May strength be granted so the world might be mended... So the world might be mended.
hahah against my better judgement I checked the 1st one out from the library at work again.....going to attempt to put all bias for horrible japanese style UI and lighting/graphics aside and try to get into this gameplay you guys are all raving about. going to force myself to put atleast 2 hours into it this time. fingers fuckin crossed.
played for a while tonight....i am REALLY disappointed in how flosty all the controls feel. your character doesn't feel like they are connecting w/the ground or w/enemies during combat very well. maybe i just gotta get used to it.
i don't get all the fusses about it, the graphics looks very last generation, by looking at the gameplay nothing is really grabbing, is it because of the open world mechanism? is it like Skyrim but more action packed?
Dark Souls is nothing like Skyrim. It's very open ended, there's normally 3 different places you can go at any given time, but it's not a large open world, there's just a ton of interconnecting separate areas.
Every weapon has a different weight, moveset, timing, hitbox, etc. Every weapon is very different.
You have to enjoy boss battles and learning how to beat enemies. Dark Souls 2 from what I've heard is 70 hours with 40 bosses.
The game might not be the most graphically impressive, but I love the design and art direction. Areas are very different and can get weird. Lots of very dark, large, and open areas.
The gameplay is all about the combat. The controls and mechanics are solid and feel great.
The lore definitely is something you have to uncover and discover for yourself. Little is explained, but there's a rich lore with hints and clues in the enviroment, npcs, and items.
The tutorial is short and simple, there's not quicktime events, control is never taken from you, the game does no hand holding, and will be a dick, but it's never unfair.

Actually the best thing in DS is that it's not your character going through this harsh enviroment. It's you. You feel what you should feel. When you are walking through dark dungeon you are afraid what lurks in the darkness. That's a game that connects you with what is going on a level that almost no other does. Also with each step you feel like you are discovering some dark but amazing world and it's not the game telling you what is happening around you. It's you who observes and learns.
+ what ZacD said.
I love me some DS...don't have a console though. Can I hibernate till 25th of April ???

They intended that. They didn't want you to be able to play with friends.
If you were even in an XBL party with anyone, it would disconnect you from playing online with DS.
They did this to make the game feel foreboding.
I feel this way too.

At least I hope ;p.

guess I get another night of Diablo 3!
And yeah graphics mean little to me, it's the overall direction I'm interested in and it looks great and varied.
This game will make me its bitch in 1 week.
