I've been working on this for a minute and would love some feed back. I'm trying to make this robot look like he's breathing.
I have no skills or knowledge here so dumbing things down would really help me out. Right now it doesnt have a rig, its just solid objects that i'm adjusting. Should i make a rig?
Ahh yea maybe it has too much movement now that I've tried that mirror exercise. Do you think how i'm animating it is fine, just being solid objects? Or would you make a sort of rig for something like this?
Stephen, your 2d animation is really nice, great timing. How do you start on that? what software do you use? I would love to experiment with that to block out my timing and some poses.
JDunay: I think it would be good to make a rig, even if it's something simple. Your breath looks like the guy is sleeping. Watch how you breath and you will see that it's very subtle.
I'm doing a few exercices myself, here's a side step( I should tone down on the finger overlaps, but I just went with it, having fun).
JDunay If I were making a character breath, i'd begin by creating a chest rig that would allow me to expand(scale up), rotate, and translate in an isolated movement from the head, neck and shoulders.
This would just allow for simpler adjustments, if any changes were needed later on
Brazz Nice sidestep animation :poly124:
I use Pap4.0 for my pencil tests.
I enjoy the feel that the pencils have when sketching in this program [compared to Flipbook/ToonBoom/TvPaint]. The only down side is it doesn't have a paint bucket feature. That being said, if you're only looking to rough out some animation.. then this is the program i'd use.
Also, back in 2010, they released the full version of their program. So now it's available for free!
Clicking on the image below will take you to their website
When I first opened I was like what is this hehe the small icons and the UI was out of this world, but I'll give it the proper time, I figure I wont use half of the tools to get some rough timing and poses like you're doing.
Opened the manual here and will take my time, thanks.
Hey thanks Sinnelius & Katana - Feel free to plug-in
Whether it be bouncing balls, kungfu koalas or whatever else comes to mind... I really enjoy seeing what everyone comes up with!!
Next month I'll be a bit more active in here as well.:poly122:
It's just so freaking nice outside this Summer!

hey stephen, how did you do those .gif thingies on your page? I mean, are you loading them in a frame or a collumn or whatever they are called?
I'd like to do something like that on my page.. seems to load fairly quickly and its cooler than a vimeo link
Hey, StephenVyas. You kinda inspired me to join. Haven't got any animation, was kinda into painting since someone suggested that it's best learn them first.
Here's some old stuff i played around.
Will tune in real soon.
Thought I'd have a go and throw some of my work into this page. It's a little different as I've come from more of a animated film side of work, but would love to get some opinions anyway.
The animation itself needs more added to it, as currently he just runs off. I plan to add something to chase him at the end, just haven't had the time for it right now.
I think the animation is great so far! I think you could spice it up by adding a longer animated hold after he let go of the arrow, adding some suspense to the viewer, then continue as it currently is. That is he only looks after the release but doesn't react just yet. I think some breathing room for the viewer may enhance the message.

numbers at the end of your video url pasted into the vv /vv bracket
tags.

Yea, i used aftereffects mostly for the compositing. The shield effect,
when he hits the ground, was created by emitting particles against
a hidden sphere for the collision.
Oh, this thread is AWESOME. I love the idea! Campion, your cycles look pretty sweet, Strongman's run especially.
Sadly we're on crunch time at work or else I'd nab lunchtime to join in, but I just tried it at home. Speed animating is totally different from my normal workflow, and I really overestimated how much time 20 minutes is. I just did my regular flow for a couple of idle cycles, and I'm not even out of stepped mode. :P I'll give it another whack another day, now that I've got that totally obvious cobweb blown out of my head.
Thanks Zaafflesia! Someday I'll make decent headway on a timed one and post that. Love to see some of your idles when you can, they tend to kick me in the pants and it would be cool to see other approaches to them!
So glad to see this thread is still going strong!
I'm working on the 11 second club challenge this month, but I might be able to squeeze in some speed animation time
StephenVyas after Makkon mentioned your secondary action in your "learning eye candy" animation. I was looking at the way his cloth moves forward, would the force of whatever move he did push his cloth backwards? Everything looks fantastic, it just looked to me like the force was pushing everything back, while his cloth was moving forward.
Hey Sketch404,
Yeah, you'd be right to say that
The effects were more or less an afterthought.
They were slapped on at the very end to see if I could make something visually interesting
Nice work Sketch404
Similar to the speed modeling thread, everyone has their own time for what they consider to be speedy. Honestly, it doesn't really matter. We just enjoy seeing everyones animations here
Did the Stewart rig come with a GUI picker, for maya?
..wow, didn't even know 7up sponsored a snes/genesis game. nostalgia overload!
yep, that's my voice.. pitched up a few degrees with a bit of help from the audio software :poly121:
The storyboard and golden poses for the scene were plotted out on a sunday evening.
Then, throughout the week i'd plug away at it the animation whenever i had some free time.
Finally, finishing off the sndfx & voices the following saturday
Something I put together in about an hour for the dota 2 workshop, speed animation! Their characters are tons of fun to animate.
I also currently giving control rigs to all of the chracters in dota, you can use them for whatever you'd like, I'm just putting them out there for anyone. There's about 16 or 17 free for the taking.
Thanks AndrewHelenek, I'm definitely going to go ape sh!t with these rigs!
Curious though, how freely can we use these rigs/meshes? They under creative commons? Usable as long as not for commercial purposes? Thanks!
I believe the only commerical purposes you'll be able to use these for is the steam workshop, outside of that, nothing commerical. But that's a guess, I really don't know.

It's done by using a Thumbnail Gallery-plugin, but instead of uploading jpegs I've substituted them for gifs.
A really nice feature, if you can get your hands on the plug-in!

That was a nice twist with the Box pickup exercise- Very unexpected

I made a walk cycle using killingpeople's Knite SDK, let me know what you think of it!

I began to learn Flash this week, and decided to do a short speed anim while I figure things out.

Nice job on the 2D stuff StephenVyas nice and bouncy. For some reason the climbing guy reminds me of that old SNES game "Cool Spot"

I don't think Stuart has a GUI picker, there might be something on the AM shelf, but I think it's just for Bishop.
Haha, yeah that game was pretty fun! I remember renting it from BlockBuster and only getting to like level 2 :P
Recently I have been tweaking the giraffe run for a few evenings its a bit faster, with more weight and generally more alive as a creature.
Would love some feedback

Are those your voice?
How long did you take to do that?
Very intimidating doing even 15 second for me...

Hope this inspire you and the people around here.
