I'm going to be releasing some Maya rigging tools for animators fairly soon, theyre more kind of game rigs so nothing fancy but quick and easy lego style setups for any kind of character...
Just a heads up, and keep the good work going guys!
Hey there! I know a lot of people at work have this workflow - getting the main body mechanics working outwards from hips, chest first. I myself always work pose to pose really haha! Keep it in stepped for as long as i can be patient to, and then polish in spline only problem is you have to keep checking back and forth for rotation issues. It's an interesting concepts though, but not one i have tried yet.
This is cuttte, what kind of shader are you using/engine?
Is it the rigging tool your showing in the reel u are going to share with us :poly121: ?
Tested the 20 minute challange again... as usual I cheated :icon15: (30 mins all n all)
Like the last time it was hard, and the fact that I couldnt find any clavicle controlls on the rig didnt make these moves easear to sell.
Any how! 30 min Dota 2 Axe makin some moves
Second crack at proper speed animation. Put the timer on 20min. This was my result. This is REALLY HARD! Great way to find bottle necks in the workflow and force myself to look at the big things. For this one I mostly focused on just getting movement on all the body parts. Timing and weight feels really off though and it overall looks like shit . Gotta go fasteeeer~!
I'm new to this whole Polycount thing, decided to give a spinning kick a go (I'm relatively new to animation too and I'm studying games design at uni and animation is part of that) took probably around 45min - 1hr wasn't really watching time if i'm honest.
Another 20min! Shit is hard . Need to install an apm counter into maya to measure speed.
Have some extreme twist problem with the right arm in this one. And didn't have time to edit left arm at all except couple of base poses T_T. Ah well, better luck next time!
New week new speed anim! Tried a more complicated one this time around and set the timer on 60min. Did not really turn out how I wanted it. But practice makes perfect I hear! Faster, faster!
Thanks Pete! Same to your sir! Keep up the awesome work
I start the timer before I set the first keyframe on anything, but I set up the models and scene I need first.
Today was sloooow! 35min challenge today. So many things I wanted to fix! This did not turn out well :P
EDIT: I actually recorded my screen while making this. Too long to make a gif out of it, so video is available here: http://streamable.com/cm1j
Yesterday I didn't have time to make a speed animating during the day, so I quickly threw one together to make SOMETHING. It did not turn out well. These speed animations are hard when making them when stressing for something else.
Second one below was a fail as I mistakenly saved over my file after baking down all the controls to try to play with the speed of things. So that one got ruined a lot. But, wanted to share regardless
Mooooar! 20min this time again (except at the end where I took like 1min extra to make the beard, hehehee)
Your beard is leading the action! Come on man, what were you THINKING!?!?
Haha jk. Im lovin this stuff man. Great work all around. Think I may have to jump in on this stuff, actually. By the time I get home, im so bloody tired, but i think i could manage 30 minutes a day.
I'M SO SO SO SORRY SLIPSIUS! I will try harder with the facial hair next time .
And yes, do it! More fun with more people doing speed challenges
Taking a break from the speed animation challenges on the weekends. But I couldn't help myself from doing SOMETHING, so I made a simple basketball bounce test. Didn't really clock this one, but probably around half an hour to an hour as I spent lots of time studying basketballs :P.
I keep ending up at 30min even if I set the timer at 20 to begin with. At 20 I have nothing, after 30 everything seems to come together. Still not happy with it of course, but this is what I managed in 30min
Good stuff, Markus! A bit of a crit, if you don't mind? I know these are quick practice things. His left foot is sliding a bit funny in the throw. Throwing would put all your weight on the ball of his toe, so the slide back definitely makes it lose some weight. Plus it looks like it's sliding on his heel. His neck also looks a bit broken at the end. Turned a little too far in the direction he's throwing, compared to his upper torso. And a bit too straight up in the air. Needs a bit of tilt.
Any chance you can start linking to a .mov dropbox file with these? I`d love to be able to scrub through them.
Thanks for feedback Slipsius! Always welcome of course .
I agree on all points. The things you are pointing to are things that the character did in the reference video I had (leaving the ground with both feet in the middle of the throw and twitching the front foot backwards etc). What I ended up with was a weird mix of realism from the reference and some stylistic choices to make it smoother as I didn't have the time to make the realistic aspects detailed enough. The feet in particular ended up looking like shit xD. I barely had time to touch the head at all.
But you are very correct in your feedback overall I think, thanks!
Bah, for some reason I feel slower and slower. Getting harder to motivate myself to do these. Lousy attempt today, but learned a lot about these kinds of loops
Here's my 2nd attempt on loop fight animation, did try to improve this time. I didn't track the overall time taken for this. The frame rate looks a bit messed up after converting into gif. Critiques n comments r welcomed
Sick animation! A lot of cool motion.. I especially like the subtle camera shake when the weapons hit. I'd like to see that happen when the axe hits the ground as well. And maybe not give the axe itself that much of a shake. I think it might give it some more weight? It just looks a bit like a toy axe when it shakes like that ;D
On a different note. Did you rig the characters yourself, or are they provided?
@derphouse
Thanks for the critique This one's a WIP.. I was hoping to add a neat BG to it and will add a camera shake when the axe hit ground as well. The GIF looks faster than the actual video even after matching the FPS. I should work on that as well.. Maybe that might solve the axe's weight issue. Characters are Dota 2 characters, But I did a re rig
U the man Widunder Giving the speed animation challange a good CPR Gonna give it another shot later tonight I hope. Great work on all of them. 20 min is hard xD
Hope to see more
oh, and greetings from sk
Hi all, I'm looking to get into doing some animations for a 3d 3rd person game I'd like to attempt to prototype, and I was wandering where you find models like the one in the image?

Thanks! One quick question about those models/rigs: Would they work inside of Unity if I exported them as an FBX etc, as I had an issue earlier today where a rig didnt work and I forgot to check beofre I started 3 days worth of work :')
Someone might have to correct me on this but I don't think these rigs are game ready.
I do have them and I should know :P but haven't tried them out anywhere but in maya.
Hey all, in the interest of cleaning up the forums a bit, Im going to unstick this thread, and put a link to it in the first post of the What are you working on Thread. We dont need both stickied.

Barely much different between the two, just correction on the curves, too fast to tell!
When do you start the timer?
I still take too long getting the first pose in so I sometimes don't time it until I've hit my first keyframe.
You timing it from T-pose I'm guessing?
I start the timer before I set the first keyframe on anything, but I set up the models and scene I need first.

Had a reference video, babies have weeeeeird sense of movement!

I swear, I`ll start doing these soon!

http://artofjoe.blogspot.ca/p/blog-page.html It's $40 for a whole pack of them. Definitely worth it.
