Wish I had my very first model still, was doing a tutorial on modelling a car, but had no idea what smoothing groups/meshsmooth/turbosmooth was, and so I didn't have any idea why my whole mesh was faceted. (and I thought I had modelled it wrong and deleted it).
As most have said, seeing progress is awesome
I dawdled around for years, wish I had got my arse in gear sooner, the work you guys are showing is stunning!
Most of my oldest stuff are characters so history is for that.
2006, first rigged character built in c4d.
and first rendered walkcycle, robot became my avatar woo. (I wanted to be an animator for a while)
2008
First fully textured character with normal maps and such (go go crazybump)
Each year I set an art goal that I want to improve on. I've always been pretty terrible/terrified of 2D painting, but I've really been working hard at it this year and painting 2-3 hours a night after work.
This is a benchmark painting done in December 2012 to the best of my (2D) ability.
about 8 months ago v now. Left one took longer lol, they were supposed to be speed sculpts about 30-50 mins each i think. Keep thinking how bad i am now but it's really nice seeing the progress
It's such a strange trip going backwards, makes me want to cringe and also a little proud.
2011:
This time last year, April/May 2012:
And same months this year:
The coolest thing about this year was that I got a couple million views from reddit, Pixologic put me on their twitter and facebook, and cgfeedback gave me a top-row, so it really felt like all the work started paying off.
Old Work
I think around 2005. The majority of this was done when I was still a certification tester, or working on pixel art for mobile games. Before I really specialized, or even knew what I was doing. First normal mapped character ever is the Orc, he's also my first taste of ZBrush - which was for an art test for Piranha Games. I got the job, and kept plugging away:
Mid Range
While at Piranha I learned a TON. Over the few years I was there, I only shipped budget titles...that I'm not SUPER proud of...but I learned a ton. both from co-workers and online competitions. I think these around from around 2008.
Current (2012 - 2013)
Now, after a few different studios and working with a bunch of clients:
Lol glad all my old work is still on deviant, pretty nice to look back and actually see you have improved XD. Good for them "I'm so shit at making characters let's quit moments".
crazy thread....seeing peoples progression is awesome, especially the 2d guys...gives me a spark of hope for my crappy 2d skills one day in the far future
Dayum, some amazing progress from all of you, keep on posting guys same rules apply = some old pieces and some new to show off your progress and inspire others.
Awesome idea for a thread. I can't help but laugh and cringe at some of the first things I did when i started at uni. The 2D Stuff especially brings me hope.
Hi, I am still a learner and can't see myself anywhere near professional but I would like to share my progress in both 2D and 3D. Maybe it is not much but hey, I only do this in my free time and don't have much of that:)

Did you start out in 2011? What the heck, great progression man...! And grats on the exposure.
