ultimately, what makes you good is knowing what the mesh you're trying to make should look like - good tools make performing the operations you need to perform a lot quicker but even with the best tools in the world you're still going to be slow if you make the wrong decisions while you're building a thing.
Your decision making capacity is a matter of experience and once you have that experience you can become competent enough quite quickly in basically any tool.

Kevins Music - I've been going through Kevin's PC and hard drives and enjoying his music for some days. I realized other people could enjoy it too and remember him fondly. It can't cover everything he liked but it's a big list from his ITunes. Maybe you'll discover or re-discover something. Great music for those long art sessions! Please consider the gofundme once more it's near the goal. It's been great to see all the kind words. Let's do some good work this year.

More can be done like beveling a lot of areas like the cloth(stitching) and wood-panelings (extruded).
Where to take it? :
What you might be able to do is take from alternative conceptual designs and merge the two crediting two concept artist instead of one with the 1 being more noted since it started the project. Your choice, looks great if you can achieve the entire look i think. Edit: conceptual designer has more of a similar theme, merge those other renders/concepts.

@ Joopson I just think it needs more areas of interest, looks a little bit diffuse right now. maybe zoom in more on the actual buildings as the foreground is not as interesting, but maybe add some stones , rocks etc
the key lock things are quite cool, but they are hidden in shadow .
as @iam717 mentioned , needs more bevels to catch the light

Can considered this a limb connection exercise, i really tried and i think it looks natural, tried connecting it to parts like the would be upper location for the tail bone and the general "wings on a Human skeleton guide" floating around by concept artists.
Lots more to do still, made this a project for as long as i could do it, we will have to see whats cooking in the bg round us. Otherwise will update when i can: okay better.
oh yeah c&c if anyone wants to, either way good bad eh, learning is learning.

For next time since you already made the piles, looks like maya?
Is there a similar copy option in maya as in 3dsmax where you can clone an object and instance it so that you can then "edit", the "original" mesh and also be editing the entire pile so that, this situation you speak of with the "ugly-unoptimized meshes", are no longer an issue at the end of the project.
Where you can then edit that one mesh and have it sort out the pile meshes and you can then have the best of both worlds and have the nice looking optimized wires/u.v.'s also?
Edit: forgot to mention
For max i found a script that replaces meshes, so if you desired to preform this technique you could if maya have a replace meshes option and then you can preform this in your current scene, the script has position constraints on axis also, so it would face correctly the separate (replaced) meshes. So script spot or similar scripting location for maya might come in handy for you.
Its what I've been fiddling with lately, the scyla nades/exhaust nozzles are doing this in that project. (I think its worth getting used to when the situation arises for anyone, if they haven't already, you could also then if you want unique uv's move the uv's to the side and texture some completely differently "making them unique" and even edit to be a single object and have different things like dmg,ect..)
Only issue I've found is if you do not continue with the projects, which utilize this "technique", can become an issue in remembering what you did last, if you put it on the back burner for a bit. 
Looks neat otherwise, i appreciated the animated gif.
