This is getting really cool. Love the style but you'll have to make some adjustments to the pose because right now Mario gets covered up a lot by Yoshi's head. Maybe position the camera up further or make Mario a bit bigger. You might also see if lowering Yoshi's posture helps.

In all honesty, there are so many factors that can affect how many textures are applied to one model. For large scale things I would use multi-sub and probably a single texture or two for an asset.
