yeah i think it will be abit expensive for most games for a while, if this gen consoles can do it, then id expect thigs like the sims to use it, but not most games. i too was excited by the prospect but not by the videos, think it was the art rather than the tech

How long does it generally take in a studio setting to create a lead character model, something in a next gen setting. Like Sam fisher from Splinter cell, or Cratos in God of War. I know there are a lot of variables, like iterations / changes, but say if things were to go smoothly. Thanks. : )

It depends what you mean by use really. In a game the best you can hope for is BC5 on current gen, which is a high quality 8bit format. I would always recommend baking to 16bit (float or integer) when authoring textures. :)
UE3 can have default look about it, but half of the time when people complain, they don't realize that a ton of last gen games they love were UE3. Mirrors Edge, Borderlands, Batman Arkham games, BioShock, XCOM, Hawken, etc.
