there are a few shader combinations that mimick this. Would creating a separate masked 8 bit alpha to separate the arm and head hair and apply this separate specular shader to them? Or is that going overboard for a realtime engine? I was planning on doing a subsurface texture as was (to show the amount of detail im trying…
Hello PC peeps - just wanted to share with you an interview with two FX artists from Naughty Dog who worked on Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. In it, Neilan Naicker and Ray Popka talk about using Houdini for doing destruction, rigid body fracturing, ingame dynamic rivers/flowmap generation and spawning thousands of running…
Hi there, so I made an animated sprite sheet with fume fx and I put it in the cryengine 3 but the sprite has a jittery motion. The actual sprite is moving around not the image on the sprite. Does anyone know why this is happening? I tried to make the file work both as a tga and dds but its still moving. If I change the fx…

You can theoretically create FX files from the material editor in Max, but I haven't done it myself so I don't know how well it would work in an actual production. Like how much manual tweaking you'd have to do to the FX file after it gets exported from Max or how useful the FX file is outside of bringing back into Max.
Hi I have an asset done in mari using mari style UDIM texture. I like to read UDIM textures using standard shader fx node (maya 2015) how can I do that? (using standard maya texture input node I can simply select UDIM option and read all the textures) doc I like to do the same but with shader fx nodes thanks
Hello all, this is my first time working with multiple inputs with FX maps. My expectation with the FX map iterations was that each iteration would combine on top of the previous, when using Blend mode set to Alpha (or Max). But with multiple images I found this is not the case. My intention was to pick randomly from…
I saw some companies`s job section (mostly looking for FX), and most of them requires the candidate to know how to use Unity or UE4, you guys know why? I think you can do a pretty decent work using blender for fx.
Hi, so I'm throwing together a quick VFX portfolio, and have hit a wall with how to approach showing off a certain effect. Essentially, I wanna have a plasma/energy ball shooting out of a source (in this case a generic turret i modelled for demonstrating weapon fx ) with a trail behind it. I figured I could get away with…
If your goal is to one-up the design with modern vfx while paying homage to the original (and have a burning desire to do so) then go for it. It's art after all, you should make something that interests you. Otherwise If you're primarily wanting to have a high quality character model for a portfolio, then you may be better…
