yeah, that's an odd suggestion, the portability is the only advantage. A cintiq or tablet will last you through many computer builds. I have a Bamboo Pen, (red Label) which i use as my portable tablet. 512 levels of PS works fine, especially for a starter tablet. About the "scratching nails".. I felt like my intuos3 felt too slippery.. Bamboo felt more like drawing on paper.. but not quite.
I had a large tablet once and I hated it. It dominated my desk and it was awkward to put in my lap if I was moving it around for comfort. The smaller tablets work best for me. I normally use my Cintiq21 for stuff but for portability I've had an Intuos 3 for the last couple of years and it has done me nothing but justice.
