Try making the specularity pink or purple in color, so that the surface feels less metallic. Also try raising the "gloss" or "specular exponent" to a higher value. I wouldn't try throwing on additional effects until you've got the specularity looking closer to what you want.

Hey Neil, try making something simple first and make it look really good. I got Janeil to make the fire hydrant, so try making something similar it will help a lot. Try a dumpster. Something that can be made easily and that you can use to practice texturing.
Just checked and flipped uv's are fine. What version of max, and what exact version of .fbx are you using? And what version of modo? Try fbx 2006. Another thing to test is import the fbx into modo, export it as obj, reimport and try again. Or try obj from max.
