Hmm, nope I don't think you can get rid of that It should be dark grey though I think, does your monitor need calibrating (or does mine?!)? Also you should play around with the "Freeform Transform" mode in the UVW editor, I don't think Maya has a manipulator like this, it works like Photoshop's free transform, pretty handy… -

I came out of Philly, it was a good place to learn the basics but most of the non-basic stuff I learned came from me spending time figuring stuff out. at least in opera you can hold ctrl and click on the image - a save dialogue will pop up. Alternativly you can assign "save to download folder" to a hotkey in opera and it will dump the image with a unique filename into the download folder. Dont know about firefox - propably out of the box not maybe search for a extention… -
