From my experience it's better to be further away and zoom in. I am not sure if I could give you an exact range. Maybe 10ft? Depends on your lens. Zooming doesn't cause as much lens distortion and you get less perspective. This gets more tricky with less space and lower quality cameras :) Outside in front of the garage… -

Really good texturing, great style too! One thing; the texture has a lot of great small detail, but certain areas lack in large detail. For example, if you zoom way out on your character, certain areas get muddy (upper legs, arms, head, neck, etc). The best looking areas for overall distance detail are the lower legs/feet.… -

If you've put the top of your UV layout there at exactly half way up the UV bounds, then as soon as you mip down a level, the mid-point pixel will inherit the white from your texture at the top.
