In continued effort to pimp up our portfolios join us for updates on Tuesday and Thursday nights! Our hope is to further our knowledge of substance and just generally level up as environment artists. So let's get started shall we? Here is what we're shooting for: Christopher (pixelpatron) will be tackling the room layout,…
So, I suppose it's about time I post up a thread about this one. I've been staring at it for too long now, and managed to mess up the lighting a bit just recently it seems. So will have to go back and fix that, by increasing the skylight brightness and lowering the dominant. Also, might have it over-sharpened. This is…

started playing last night and am digging it so far. the lighting is gorgeous, nice texture work for not being overly normal/specish although some more material definition might be nice. some of the areas look a little too BSP like but then again some of the setpieces are fuckin awesome. cant wait to play more :D
Looking good, the textures are nice. As for making it a night scene, i would do exactly what toren3d, Although it might be beneficial to the over all effect of the scene to add a light source "other the the moon" with a kind of glow effect. And on the nit picky side of things, why make the ground a box? wouldn't a plane…
Tell me about it! My brain, unfortunately, does not seem to shut down as well as it used to. For me its a case of too much PC screen time and too late at night, it runs on and I'm pushing polys, or thinking about how an environment might work depending on how tilable it is horizontally - in my dreams or light sleep.
Magic Carpet was just deforming heightmaps if I remember right. Easy enough, most engines are capable of it these days. Not sure how Red Faction handled it. You should probably check out the Battlefield Bad Company "Destruction" videos, it's got some footage and interviews which might shed some more light on that. Google it
I know theirs a few, I'll see if I can dig them up later. till then here's some of my notes from when I was learning it, some of it may be off but I've tried to update it to some degree (incoming wall of text): MAYA Notes Basics Menu names: 1st down (menu type) = Status line 2nd down (Tabs) = Shelf Left = Toolbox Spacebar…
You need more back light so that your shadows don't look as dark and you can see what is around. Look on the left of this building, the light from the moon is lighting that area. You have some nice backlight on the light blues. Maybe on your env you can have some of that light as a directional light that casts a shadow of…
For this assignment we have to create a building using modular assets that snap together. Earlier this year I made a game concept titled Spicy Jam so will be recreating one of the environments (the Subway/underground) for this project. I didn't get to make concept art so got advice to pick an existing train station to base…
