wille, yes, some things, like certain armours contain speculars in the alpha of the normalmap, but others, like faces, do not contain any kind of trace of a specular map.

Heheh, yeah. You might also try a Composite map containing two Mask maps, each containing a bitmap and the 3DPainter, with one Mask using the Inverse Mask checkbox...?
Or Max > Containers. 2010 and 2011 allow you to open the containers and edit the files locally without having to go back to the original file. Or what about using render presets?
you could also google for "airplane container". Those seem to be fairly standardized as well, and lend themselves better for applying some futuristic design than boring shipping containers
