also learning mayas workflow will help you improve maxes if/when you return. you wont need to re-map your hotkeys on your first day, just take your preferences folder (here abouts-Documents\maya\8.5\prefs) to work on a stick, copy them onto the machine there and you'll have all your hotkeys and custom buttons -

(I guess not everybody played Mario RPG) ---Edited---(didn't want to double post) Is U-Paint still going to work with Maya 8.5? Or should I try a different program that lets me paint, right on the model like body paint? -

the hotbox in maya is stuck

I recommend buying a keyboard that's backlit helps allot if its dark. And i use a razer gaming mice, works really good for me.
