the hotbox in maya is stuck

working as usual in Maya and everything is fine 
then suddenly my hotbox (the menu that comes up when pressing space)
simply won't change from animation mode.
no matter how i keep changing to polygon mode or rendering mode or what ever,
the hotbox menus is still stuck in animation mode
i'm running maya 8.5 and never had this problem before, anyone got a clue what to do to fix this?
