I am also confused by this thread but I'm still gonna say my piece: You seem to be misinterpreting what people mean when they say 'practice'. It feels like you find one resource and focus on that for a short period then find something else. You need to practice all of these new resources you're finding by visiting them… -

We actually use Substance Painter's ability to export highpoly tessellated meshes that have been deformed by Displacement map. So first you create "base"materials in SD. Then apply them in SP to your model and randomize & blend them as needed. Finally, export the displaced mesh from SP. For right now, we use the UE4 LOD… -

Re: How long do average/professional modelers spend re-topologising?
I've just finished retopologizing some sculpted curly hair. That took me about 3.5 hours to get to the final polycount of around 1700 polys. That's an extreme example since it was retopo'ed from scratch without re-using bits of a base mesh. It also doesn't have a nice regular surface so most of it was done painstakingly… -
