metroid prime hunters is a good example of vertex lightning. most of the textures are pretty light greys and then colored+lighted with vertex colors. i wouldn't suggest this for charcters or game models, but for static environment it's a good option.
I'm using MAYA 2008 Extension 2 In your viewport menu, under Shading, switch on Polygon Transparency Sorting, as opposed to Object Transparency Sorting, this will fix all your alpha problems. See Example : -

I see, makes perfect sense. Also, I wanted to force myself to use "Expert Mode" view, but for example, how do access the modifier panel to add a Symmetry? There is no way to bring up the modifier panel only temporarily? (going in and out "Expert Mode" is not the smoothest of trainsitions,at least on my pc)

Is it possible to have a dynamic minimap in the game?if so how? I have a 3 story building which can be navigated through stairs and i want the minimap to correspond to that story's map so when the player reaches for example the 2nd story it dynamically changes to that story's minimap.
I am trying to instance a substance with blueprints and the new instance would change a specified parameter in the substance. An example would be a box with a grunge overlay. Each new box the substance would random seed the grunge through blueprint. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
