Hi, layouts presets are saved with the blend file you are editing with Blender. That's to say, your saved presets are only available for the blend file your are editing, and are saved automatically while you save your blend file.

I don't have a mesh with dead verts that I can test right now, but isn't convert to editable mesh then back to editable poly clean up all the dead verts?
Hey EarthQuake, I don't think so. Not sure why it was happening, but I've managed to fix it! All I did was convert to edit mesh and then back to edit poly and it smooths fine :)
