This is a ray distance issue where the rays intersect with unintended geometry in their path. One option is to tweak the maximum ray distance another is to use a manually defined cage -

Re: Speed up Photoshop using RAMShop if you have more than 2G RAM and use XP.
I'm actually running XP 64, and 8 gigers of rams. But PS will only see 3.2 gigs of it, which is pretty annoying. So if this works that may be very cool. [edit] Actually this would probabbly be a bad idea to do on a 64 bit os, as it would keep that % of ram from other programs that may need it. -

Thanks for the comments folks. Zipfinator : For metal I just do it by hand. I start with the clay tool and rough things up a little, enough to just give things a bit of a warble. Then I do some subtle damage with the clay tool, maybe mask some more areas I want to pop out an additional panel of metal from and deform it… -
