This depends on what the asset actually is. For objects like this, tiling textures work best most often then not. Create the texture you want to be on the object, then unwrap the object onto the tiling texture.
Can anyone verify if it also does AO self shadowing for object? Or is it only on an object-to-object basis. If I never have to bake another AO map, it will be a glorious day.
start with simple shapes and objects you have around you. it's the best reference if you actually have the object! then work your way from there to a scene or more complicated objects.
well you model and unwrap one piece, collapse it, (this keeps the uvs you made in the object) and you just clone this object :) then you can merge the objects together and voil
