Thanks guys, turns out the USB version of Slax saved my butt and let me burn an Ubuntu DVD so I can get things rolling properly again. I have a y500, the predecessor to the y510p. I can only say good things about the lenovo Y series. Honestly the best laptop anywhere near the price range that I have personally have owned/used to date.
