Hi all!
This is going to be my first project shared with everybody here on Polycount. I am really looking forward to this journey :-)
First! A quick work background of me:
I am an Swedish Environment Artist working at IO Interactive in Denmark ,Creators of Hitman, Kane & Lynch and Mini Ninjas (been there for almost 2 years). Previously I been working at Massive Entertainment for over three years and less than a year at a small company called Recoil Games in Finland. Thats all! :-)
The Project:
Do you remember an old Japanses serie called Robotech or more correct Macross? I am going to start this project by making a VF-1 Fighter Plane/Mech from that serie. It was one of my favourite shows when I was little.
This is a reference of it in the GERWALK mode: Half Bird, Half Robot!
This is the latest picture:

Ahhhh memories, I hope you complete this one.
If you need more reference check out this page
http://www.macross2.net/m3/sdfmacross/sdfmacross-index.html
note the variations on the VF1 are primarily in head shape.
Check the links for line art of all sorts of bits of the VF-1's
its very hard to make it look correct though..
- Goraaz - I am thinking of going with the model/camo of "Rick Hunters" VF-1.
White, black and red. I am going to try Rig it and make a transformation. That will make a cool turntable I think. :-)
- dejawolf - Cool, Do you have a work in progress thread? I wish I had the toy.
hope you pull out something cool here, good work so far!!
This is all I could do today. As you can see on the screenshots, I am really trying not to go into any details at all. Just the great shapes of the plane. When I am done with the "plane" form, I am going to pose it in half mode, block it off, all the missing pieces. And last and not least, mockup of the mech form. Then I can decide the head shape, jippie!
Here is the paint job I was thinking to go with, really nice real model:
It is going to take time until my model is as good as this. :-)
But I am not quiting! I update you guys more soon!

I just realized I made a mistake on the front, have to fix...

Take a look if you are interested.
My project sure aint going in hyperspeed. But I promise I will be done be the end of 20...2011 ;-)
This is my latest update: (I also made an overlay in perspective to see if it was way off.)
I also remembered the days when I was making airplanes for "World in Conflict", I modeled this Su-27 Flanker airplane & Joakim M
A small news: I searched the Ebay and bought myself a VF-1S model, import from Japan.
Here is the product, http://eng.yamato-toys.com/items/detail.php?gid=29
It will make my life easier when building the model. Can´t beat good referance aye. :-)
I do have an important question for you all. Is it ok to modify the head? Add extra details from other models heads. Ok, let me show you...
This is my start: #2
It is based on the VF-1S, Death Squadron...

BUT, I found later models wheres head looks like this...

&

There is some details on these I would like to "steal".
So what do you say guys, I need your input.
thx
If you're wanting to please otakuish fans and or make a "pure" vf-1 then no.
If you want to make a cool macross/robotech variable fighter, then go nuts.

Good work so far!
I am still working on the head. I have no wip on the head for the moment BUT I have done some Zbrush tests that could be useful and applyed to the real mesh later.
Here you go.. I dont know what it is, maybe a SCiFi clock radio? :-)
Used with MAHcut MECH brushes, clipping brushes and shadow box (with a alpha from PS). New features I really wanted to try out before beginning to use it on the real model.
cheers
Next step will be to finish the mockup of hands, landing gear and cockpit. I want all the bones to be in place before I start modeling for real. I will after that start to make one piece final, I want to see how I am going to texture and build this model, which shaders to use and so on.
Here is a .mov file of the transformation. Very rough with a lot of interecting, but you will get an idea. http://www.jenzolsson.se/VF1/transform.mov
Here is a screenshot from 3dsmax:
Keep you posted!
good luck, the jet looks pretty cool
I am starting to put some texture on it. Nothing special yet. :-)
