"Best render settings" change immensely between different scenes. I think what your after is a clay type render. Just turn on Final Gather with mental ray in the mental ray tab. I assume what he meant was that big studios would clone their workstations from a master HDD, not through VM, so software management wouldnt be setup such that all workstations are just slaves to a master system.
