Just write it down. Describe the environment or character in detail, starting from the main idea. You will slowly find more and more questions to answer, and the background will fall into place. been using a cintiq at work: pro: sexy. newer versions don't have any device lag at all--with working in 2d or 3d (i used the cintiq as a navigation/modeling interface directly, instead of the mouse). pro: quick wysiwyg working. Triangles are fine, so long as it gets terminated on a flat/planar area of your model. Same with n-gons. Try it out and see how it sub-divides, you'll find your answer. Experiment.
