This is a model I did over a year ago. About to start getting back into 3D work. This one doesn't light properly. Seems like the edges just need a better flow I assume? It's not because it needs a normal map because even subsurfacing it the 3rd image still shows it is messed up. More edge loops or should the left side of…
I think it comes down to 1 simple thing... does it look good? I dont think in games, edge flow and UV space and all that REALLY matters in the final product. as long as it looks good enough to be in the game. obviously with proper edge flow and good uv layout and all that, it will have better chances of fitting the…
Thanks guys :) Another update, fixed the engraving - had to flatten the blade and delete all poly's to a flat plane then extrude borders and create loads of control edges etc. Should be able to load up the original blade shape and follow that with the improved edge flow...tomorrow!
you have kinda answered you own question in that last sentence, look at the dogs anatomy, use the muscles as a basis equally look at edge flow on human faces - some muscles are the same for both species and will act in the same way so the edge loops will be similar
IC.Shape has brush-based tools, but i'm pretty sure it's not what you're looking for.. And don't the Graphite Tools allow you to sketch edge flow? Thought there was such a tool for retopologizing..
Superb hard surface modelling skill! Love seeing all those details in a very clean mesh. I wonder how you keep the edge flow. Thanks for posting these!
I did a rough paintover. Basically, the edge flow around the mouth was quite off. You want your edges to flow as smoothly as possible. You also don't want n-gons, like I said before. terminate the edges into other edges, which should be quite easy to do in most areas of your model. You also need to rely less on turbosmooth…

Good start. My main gripe is that there is a lot of pinching and you're edge flow needs work. Once you smooth all that out, the surfaces should have way less artifacts.
