there's a lot of confusing stuff in max that you'll probably never need to touch - if you head straight for the poly-modelling and basic texturing user tutorials (i'm sure someone who's not about to shut down and go home can point some out for you) you'll have a much easier time

How about you make a prop package for unity? Try to make some money off of it and learn the engine if you haven't already. You could also try and create a package that lets you create an entire scene that'll look good in your portfolio at the same time.
