Im not a pro or an expert but I can say that you would do well to find interest in the mod community . You can learn a lot about game development and mod experience counts as game dev experience . I know of many many people that have got jobs from the mod community . Look at cgchat contests for example a bunch of people… -

If I were you I'd work on more personal projects and think of 3d art as a hobby, at least until the industry gets back on it's feet. There are usually art jams, game jams and art contests going on in the unreal engine and artstation communities which will get you acquainted with the skill bar & your peers. You can try… -
