Close down Maya 2016. Rename the prefs folder in /documents/maya/2016/prefs Change it to something like prefsOLD Start Maya 2016 it should detect that prefs is missing and it will discover your older version and ask you if you want to use those preferences.
I've noticed that the boolean modifier has been changed since 2016. Is it correct that in order to ie. carve out a cylinder from a box in 2017, we have to select the box now first and then add the cylinder after and select subtract? I realize that i can drag the order around, but it just seem weird compared to 2016.
dont worry to much about being 'extremely' accurate, because there is no "single" hk 416 you can go to HK's own website and see different stocks rails etc...things to get right though are the main parts of the 416... the trigger group eject ports etc, everything else can be 'accessorized' so to speak...…

We use contractors who do this. We get errors with their files all the time. They use the Color Map node (not supported in 2016). When you use 2017 to "Save As 2016" it doesn't remove or convert it into something 2016 understands. So, the material breaks. We also get a Mass FX version warning, thankfully that's harmless.

Try using 2017 instead of 2016 (or try at least 2016 ext1 sp1) - it doesn't have a complete selection implementation for Viewport 2.0. Selection in VP2 suffered from various problems for a long time.
