Not a bad start at all. If the asset is just for practice don't be afraid to use more triangles, especially to get the silhouette right (not really saying you mesh is too lowpoly or anything though). I think it needs to be triangulated to be exactly the same triangulation as your LP mesh (otherwise xnormal will display an error). In case you don't triangulate both your mesh and cage, you do not "freeze" your triangulation and it may happen that your final baked normal map and your in engine auto-triangulation doesn't… -

No, max generates its normals to show up correctly in the offline renderer, which for whatever reason must use totally different bi/tangents than realtime shaders, this is really apparent when doing hard surfaced stuff.
