here is me thinking other artists enable stuff like this without a second thought :) it should maybe renamed 'freeze modifier stack' or 'not 3dsmax edit poly' I suppose it useful in that you can do tests edits , then if you need to do some more work on the previous modifiers, then you can just clean mesh data and try again
