is there a tutorial out there for rendering hi polys in maya? ive seen this one http://www.artemstudios.com/2010/tutorials/material/MaterialRenderingTut.htm which ive used in max, but is there an equivalent for maya? thanks

so i was laying down some base colors with vertex paint on a high poly mesh but it doesn't render. just curious if there is a way to convert vertex painted color to material ID or something?

It really depends what you are rendering. if it is only alpha normal spec and diffuse they can be really close. if your scene enables refraction reflections etc etc things are different but indeed we are close to getting mR quality in real time.
