wow, intuos 4, i wonder how good will be respect the intuos 3. I own a intuos 3 a4 and it's nicer compared to intuos2 but nothing so good to draw as with a pencil (it's a bit laggy).

One of the benefits of the intous 3 is the buttons favor a righty or a lefty. It seems like this one only has them on one side, but it does kind of look like that the buttons could pop off and clip on the other side. I would hope so!

You can just turn the tablet 180 degrees.

thats cool and all...but ill stick with my nostromo/cintiq 12in combo tyvm! Those side buttons seem cool until you realize it's eating up your tablet space and bumping up againts your keyboard.

That nib holder is cool though...always lose my damn nibs!

Yeah I'd be all over that. No touch strips, no buttons, no giant border around the entire thing. Make it super thin and super light.

I've never understood how anyone can use 6-8 buttons and a couple touchstrips to replace a keyboard with 103+ buttons. I mean I guess it might work for the concept guys and the painters who never leave photoshop. But I'm in and out of photoshop and a dozen other programs on a daily basis, sometimes needing to type, sometimes rotate in 3d space, sometimes paint. I would just love something that took up less space on my desk and accomplished all the same tasks.

yeah I don't think I ever really use the keys on my intuos 3. the entire thing should be a nice thin flat drawing board, as mentioned. maybe they can sell an add on for people interested in that.

Having recently purchased a black bamboo to test it out as cheap solution, I really like how they integrated some of it's strengths into the Intuos4, namely the ring thingie and the detachable cord. It sure would be nice to be able to detach the active area as a standalone mini compact tablet tho!

I only wish they'd stop selling a mouse with it, and offered better pen solutions. The classic pen and the intuos2 pen are in my opinion waaaay better than the fat intuos3+ one...

The intuos3 line sure started to feel heavy compared to the almost unbeatable intuos2 so the lighter weight is kinda cool!

Glib, it seems like different users have very different expectations when it comes to speed. I noticed that many 2Donly guys are fine with reaching out for menus and icons, as opposed to 3Dguys more likely to want very very very fast access to tools by keyboards shortcuts.

I think that maybe 12 programmable buttons would be a good enough solution for 3D needs, provided you'd have quite some stuff as onscreen buttons aswell.
You could very well velcro that thing on the top edge of an intuos too :

(But that does not solve the navigation issue for every program tho. Maya is alright for that, since you only need alt and the stylus clicks. But for max for instance it would be a pain. A Spacenavigator can help, but it goes back to the speed thing - it'd feel to sluggish for most fast 3d artists. I love my Intous 3, though its surface is wearing away...

Love the integrated nubs since I lost mine right away.

What about USB 3.0? I was wondering if they would wait for that since thats going to make USB so much more powerful (delay? None existent). More power.

It just around the corner... If they could just hold off a few months and make it backwords compatible with 2.0.. Yea, I know dreaming. Guess it will end up with a Intous 4, "SE" like they have in the past when they started integrating usb into the Intous series originally.

When are we going to get to a point where we no longer need the tablet? I can't wait until it's just a pen and some sort of USB location point (like the Wii's tv bar). You could then set the drawing area to any size you wanted and draw on any surface you wanted. Get on it Wacom.

would it make a difference for anything tho? i can't see any performance difference between serial port versions and whatever USB they put into intuos1/2/3 series at all. no lag on any tablet i've used so far.

This looks slick! I do like how the buttons are located on side. I may actually consider using them now but I doubt it would ever replace the keyboard. I'm a shortcut fiend, so I could never bind enough hotkeys to the buttons available.
I'm in no rush to run out and pick one up, I don't even use my Intuos 3 at home anymore, not since I got my Cintiq. But if they release a new batch of Cintiqs then I'll probably be pissed :P

I draw with the tablet offcenter anyway... So i still have plenty of room for my keyboard in the centre/off to the left. I cant even get the hang of using the buttons on the pen

I can see myself making a few hotkeys but i'd still stick to the usual shit like b for brush / space to navigate etc. Im all in favour of more usable space - its a tablet after all, i want to use it to paint not so i can bind more hotkeys...

For those who don't use the touch-strip, here's a suggestion:
Set it to [ and ], so you can interactively change the brush-size in Photoshop. It's fantastic.

this is probably a dumb question to most but i'm curious:

what's with all the nib/pen tip talk?

do you guys really change them that often? I've used a tablet/three different kinds for four years and have never changed the tip. do other kinds do different things or something? I thought it was just if you lost one. and even then, how the hell do you lose one? do you take apart your pen often?

nibs have different shapes and made of different materials to better emulate various traditional drawing materials. But like you i have never changed my nibh

Despite the obvious price gouging... and being very skeptical about any new products from them being rehashes of the same tech in new packaging, I have to say I'm a little excited. Mostly for the ambidextrous support. Being left handed and having to deal with the left touch strip in a high traffic area has always been annoying, even with all of its functions disabled. I hope it doesn't look or feel gimped up when it gets flipped around.

And well. The pressure sensitivity is 2048 now compared to the 1024 of the older tablets. This means everything will be twice as awesome! (ahem, Maybe not)

amen!!! us lefties have been getn the shafted for tooooo long. If they have a left handed option even on the 3's id buy another one.

In aus you can get the intuos 3 as a student version without the pretty packaging. It just comes in a brown box and has no software but it drops at least $150 off the price.

Well I have had my Intuos3 for coming on 4+ years now, I have dropped it, thrown it, spilt stuff on it. I ever superglued it. But it still works, infact it works just as good as the day I got it. I supose if your new to getting a graphics tablet may be get an Intuos4, but is there any major bonus to having an Intuos4 over an Intuos3?

I'm left handed and I have no problem with the current layout. it has buttons on both sides, and frankly they are more than enough considering how much I use them. I need to have my right hand free for swiching between the mouse and the pen on the flywith my ninja skillz.

Any word yet on how much it will cost without the optional mouse? Haven't been able to find it yet on Amazon, NewEgg, or PC Micro Center, and I can only see a price listing for it on Wacom's site for the medium size with mouse...

In a perfect world 300$. The mouse costs 69$ so. Never saw the point with the mouse anyway. Or... well.. I never used it at least.

I used to use the wacom mouse, about 8 years ago when i had my 4x5 intous 2. At the time it was better than any of the track-ball mice i had. HEY GUYS, REMEMBER TRACK-BALL MICE?

whats funny is Wacom Mice > Mac Mighty Mouse. I couldn't stand the either mice, but the Wacom won when there wasn't any other spare mouses at work.
