the reviews are phenomenal. It's currently the highest rated game ever according to Gamerankings.com I believe, higher than zelda.

probably going to hold off for the PC demo, even though i've preloaded on Steam, just to make sure the bastard works on my machine smile.gif

played part of the demo on EQ's 360.. didn't need to play the whole thing, since about the first 5 minutes sold me well enough.

    Absolutely loved it.
When you break through the water's surface at the beginning, I wasn't even aware it was realtime at that point. Very engaging. Love the story, love the setting. Got it preloaded on Steam smile.gif

Same thing hit me first time round, the seamlessness of the transition between intro cinematic to real-time was pretty amazing to me. I sat there staring for 10 seconds before realising I could move.

Thanks for the heads up gauss wink.gif

yeah the cinematic to real-time was nicely done. Probably the best I have seen so far. I also just sat there and then was like come on...whats going on.. Oh I can move.. what the ?

Wow this water and fire is pretty.

not any more, no, now that the demo is officially out. additionally, i'd much rather deal with an unencrypted torrent version than tangle with a fileplanet download.

what i enjoyed about the demo is that the intro of the game, other than the very well incorporated cinematic-type reveals, is very close in execution to the beginning of System Shock 2. but it's been finely tuned and iterated 'til it glows, now.

Downloaded the PC demo today. Gotta say I was a tad dissapointed. They also managed to pack both ending subtitles in simple flash format in the game content folders. Thank god I only read the first sentance.

No AA/AF options, forcing does'nt seem to help. The textures are very muddy and low res, see the big daddy drill for example. No DX9/DX10 difference as far as I can tell, but both ran very fast. Audio is phenominal.

My major gripe is the first plasmid you get. Why.. would anyone... inject themselves with a random syringe without knowing what it was? Just kinda takes you out of the atmosphere. Also some of the introduction models are low quality, like the squid for example. And the animations outside of prescripted scenes are pretty stiff.

preordered and preloaded on steam. i'm so pre-excited!
Motz: what'd you go poking around for if you didn't want spoilers? it's like being surprised that when you pulled the end of a videotape out and held it up to the light, you could see the end of the movie! smile.gif

visually Bioshock's impact is similar to HL2--there are some pretty iffy individual textures or models here and there, and i agree some of the baddies could be better textured and animated--but the quality and consistency of the overall experience is the important thing, and on that the game scores high. just like when i tried it out on the 360, i didn't finish the demo... i just wanted to make sure the demo ran smoothly.

Honestly some guy from gamefaqs forums was posting how he got AA to work... by showing a BIK movie screenshot.. He could'nt tell the diff. Apparently AF (which he also altered) affects BIK movie playback.

So I poked around the game files to get screenshots to show him. It surprised me because it's just an un-needed file. You can just delete it and nothing breaks.

I tried editing the ini file to change detail levels to ultrahigh/high etc as the examples show, but it does'nt change anything. There is no extended detail for PC. It was consolized with lowest common denomination assets. Meh. Happens.

Just played the demo on my laptop and wow that ran smooth. Looked nice too in my opinion BUT I will be picking it up for my 360 tomorrow morning.

I wish it came with the unreal editor. Oh well UT3 is only a few short months away.

Runs sweet as on my laptop. I think Art asset comparisons to HL2 are a little unfair personally. Sure, there is the occasional seam here and there If you look close, but nothing looks like it was UV'd by Valve. The overall quality of production is *much* higher here imo. The demo was fun, atmospheric and well Art directed. Seems like a very well designed game. I'll grab it for pc for sure, but I'm always wary of reviews that high.

Supposedly the PC version will come with an editor.

I tried the Demo out on my desktop, which is pretty bad hardware wise, and I could indeed run the demo, however it was so optimized that it looked like quake 2, haha. Though I'm not stressing as I'll be getting a pretty top of the line laptop in a week or two, granted it'll be a macbook pro, but I'll just use bootcamp and load up windows on it.

Erm... if it was "proper" widescreen then 4:3 users would get left and right cut off, no? Or would you prefer stretching the image and having everyone fat or thin and tall??

It's not getting stretched in WS mode, it's just getting cropped. It's a half-ass way of supporting widescreen. And yes, you're exactly right. 4:3 and 5:4 resolutions should be missing the extra draw area on the sides, comparable to what the widescreen is losing on the top and bottom.
Widescreen monitors should have that exact same vertical draw area, as well as increased horizontal draw area. This is a serious f'k up on their end, and needs to be fixed.

Demo isn't a full representation of what to expect from the game. After the demo area, the environments become non-linear, you have a chance to experiment with the AI's interactions between eachother, and of course, use a fuckload more plasmids. If System Shock 2 was any indication, the game doesn't get 9.9's for having a pistol, machinegun, and 'force lighting'.

I find it amusing that it is okay for 3:4 screens to lose part of the larger picture that widescreen gets, but holy hell should that be reversed everyone is super pissed.

I don't really care one way or another, to be honest.

If people with 4:3 screens want to play letterboxed, Sectaurs, that'd be fine by me. Personally, I'd hate that.

The studio's reasons for cropping the widescreen content is complete bullshit, though. It's to have a "fair" playing field? WTF?.

It's like saying all games should be capped at 30fps, because people with high end hardware have higher framerates, and therefore a better advantage.

Same with internet connections. Why not lock all game network traffic to 5KB/sec? We gotta be fair to those 56ker's, afterall.

That new widescreen HDTV you bought? Nope - we're cropping it!

Everything is widescreen these days. DVD's, HD video, film - hell, even PORN is widescreen. The fact that they're cropping our screen, particularly for the bs excuse given, doesn't fly.

How is this even remotely a big deal? had there not been a site pointing it out 98% of of the people wouldn't even notice or care.

Also, it's not like this is a movie where what you view is constrained by what a camera man filmed therefor cropping the images does drop out information you're "supposed" to see. This is a game where you can freely look around and I highly doubt you'll miss any information by playing on widescreen.

Yeah I never would have known about the cropping if it weren't for that site and honestly I could care less.

I'm playing it on my pc at max res and it looks gorgeous. I picked up my special edition from gamestop this morning and I must say I am impressed with the little figure of Big Daddy. This guy is a pimp. Not just some cheap plastic figure. It's actually a pretty solid resin like statue.

Cropping top and bottom makes sense in Bioshock, atleast in demo there arent huge height differences. The game is quite flat and you really lose nothing when you cant see the celing and the floor for extra 5".
I bet the whole widescreen growd would cheer in pleasure if 4:3 and 5:4 users would get forced black bars, cause then its real widescreen game...

BTW i have 16:10 monitor and the ultimate cropping of doom didnt ruin my experience one bit.

But i think the PC version has massive load times and stuttering compared to XBOX version. Still cant make up my mind which one to get cause the 360 one is like 20% more moneys :/

The black bars would suck on 4:3 - there's no reason a gamer would be happy about that :P
And I personally think the cropping in D3 is quite noticeable. Problematic? Not at all. But annoying. Same thing with Bioshock. It's not going cause problems, but it's crap that we don't get our full widescreen resolution.

Does that run it well? I bought the core2Duo E6600 last year, and just picked up the 320MB 8800GTS last week.

Also, Nvidia users. I'm told these beta drivers dramatically increase FPS in Bioshock: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_163.44.html
