Welcome to my project page, Some of the following parts are WIP, But still feel free to critique everything and anything. The parts which are not done are the cuboid like parts. Current WIP: 22/10/2022
This is thumbnail post, it is not relevant to time line of work.

Looks cool from First Person.
I think the shapes are still to blocky and need more variation, curvyness and details.
Gazu
Alright I will keep this in the for front of my mind whilst working, Ill see if I can get more dynamic shapes in. Thanks!
Update, Spent all day trying to take the advice on board, still a WIP
still a WIP< but close to the end.
Feel free to crit as hard as possible. Looking to improve.
I have decided to try a new approach and start with doing the internals roughly and then expanding out. Although its extra work i do feel the weapons will feel a lot more technical and complex once parts have to be accounted for on the design. This is just the basic frame. Pretty simple but I would say a decent start. (I have been looking at Alex Senechal work aiming to learn from his approach.
I do still have the other gun saved, but the new info I know now should allow me to make much more elegant shapes and details. Looking forward to posting soon.
I have decide to do it again.... for the 7th time and I think I kind of see the approach after watching a few videos on fusion artists. I believe I am certainly beginning making use of the advance techniques now. Its just the barrel. But at least the shapes look interesting so far.
So recently I have been looking at more work of the most renown hard surface artists and have decided to go back and froth with shape design in 2d and 3d for the best results. Here is my response to the barrel and will be going back to the body of the gun soon once a few more concepts have been done. The portions of primary secondary and tertiary certainly need more work. But as a concept to create ideas whilst using my 3D head. I think this is optimal. *also that I have a really bad association with drawing, so starting in 3d and flipping back and froth feels good.*
I like the nearly finished version of your first attempt. What materials did you have in mind for the different parts?
The barrel of the newest version (7th) indeed has nice shapes. Are you looking at any reference when working? Struggling to come up with new shape ideas is often solved that way at least in my experience.
In my eyes these parts look a bit disconnected from the rest. Maybe cou can try having guide slots run along the barrel and have small slides embedded in them.
Fusion 360 is such a fascinating software (to think Autodesk would provide something for basically free 🤯). I worked with it a lot for CNC milling parts of instruments for our company at home to help out during covid bad times (mostly for fingerboards of Zither and parts of Hackbrett, very niche instruments) and I think it's great. Just the sketching part is kind of fiddly sometimes.
Would you say it helps you get your ideas out quicker than traditional modeling?
I think the way I worded it didn't quite make it clear. I mean something along those lines maybe:
It's not modeled well at all but shows what I meant better I think.
Cheers
ahh I see what you mean and I agree, I have been looking at this part thinking that it does look cool but needs some more grounded details that would make it feel more believable. having some sort of design connecting the body to the barrel directly is what I have been looking for. Perhaps ill do a line of manufacture. and create some connector points. Thanks for the input. Ill certainly put it to use tomorrow hopefully.
Also I do believe fusion does allow me to make far more complex geo without the restraints of bevels and cuts as much. It does present new issues but they are possible to overcome and make fast iterations
so, I have edited the concept more and aimed to understand the general shapes. Here is the concept:
here is the start of the block out, I do have a lot to do but for a start. Its alright. Need to work faster though, Been busy today.
My development stages:
Ok so I haven't been around for a while on my thread. I decided to focus on re-approaching the task. I am on my 11th or so try, Here are my results:
It is still a WIP and as always im open to any crits.
I really like your newest approach! It has matured a lot and looks cool. Once you added more details and textured it I think it will be great.
Though I am not quite fond of the barrel ending just like that, as if it was cut.
Thanks Simon, I will use the input. I will certainly try make the end more elegant in nature to indicate a coming to an end. That is a really good point!
Recent updates from today, Will update tomorrow on progress towards feedback concerning the barrel.
Still messing about with the smaller details and some shapes. Days progress, ( ill work a little more tonight )
WIP on the back of the gun, Still need many changes but it is coming along well.
cleaning the stock and designing one that looks much more impressive.
still a WIP, Open to feedback and ideas.
Design Updates again, WIll post more soon
it improves with every pass, keep up the good work! it's getting pretty dense with detail, you may find it more and more difficult to adjust all elements of it with a single pass. it looks like you're enjoying yourself.
As always, feel free to crit the WIP, Thanks!
I am enjoying the process, although too much since Im pushing my self quite hard. I am looking forward to the final result as I have many new techniques to showcase as well during texturing.
Still a WIP, Changed the colours to get a better idea of how it may look later on.
Also loving the potential colour change on the barrel and spacing ?
You've an eye for design and I've enjoyed following along.
Basically spot on in terms of iterating upon this object's initial blocked out base coupled with offered critique which during the process revising various elements a fresh set of eyes had deemed might need further work/alteration - so great going so far 👍️
My only contribution, is this indepth write-up I'd stumbled across a while ago that may prove helpful as some sort of reference and honestly a goldmine of info it has indeed been for personal projects I'm currently working on.
Gun Modeling For FPP Games
As an aside chapter 5, discusses the merits of analyzing an object by creating a Hierarchy of importance probably I think useful keeping in mind for future projects.
Cheers.
I am glad you enjoyed seeing the humble process of mine and spent time following the journey thus far. The resource you listed "Gun Modelling for FPP Games" I will check this out now, Thank you for the insight! I will try apply as much as the knowledge Ill read on chapter 5 now as quite a lot of the pieces are still editable.
Updates:
To whom has been following my posts, I have taken a massive break from the gun (Until now) to do environment work and texturing procedurally in UE5. Hopefully you enjoy the updates and can see my applying the advice.
Scope update, thinking of a more dynamic scope with a stronger looking structure.
Changes towards the scope and smaller details.
I have finished the main components on the gun including some retopology for rendering purposes. The next objective will be the box the weapon will be showcased in. Here is a few progress shots WIP
Most of the recent progress has been clean up and final changes, Hopefully some are visible at a glance.
Updates, Box and hinges made:
Test Render 001
Finished:
I know I am late.
Just wanted to say, you did a fantastic job! Great perseverance on this one!
The final design is a perfect combination of "delicate" details where there is no strain on the weapon and strong parts where needed.
Any plans to texture this further?
Yes I do plan to do so, but as of now I am applying to jobs with my current portfolio of work. When I do get the chance I will be updating this work thread and making textures in designer.
Setting up UV texture space, Looking forward to the advanced texturing tech I will be using.
Setting up the procedural textures/shaders in UE5 now using data gathered inside substance painter and maps from substance designer. I have also been creating decals as seen on the 2nd image.
It looks really good - pretty much finished to me, doesn't it?
Would you mind showing/explaining your setup in Unreal Engine?
Once it is finished, I will show a breakdown on how it was made, I will most likely post an in-depth one here, if not it will be on my artstation.
still a WIP. but coming along nicely
