The Hobbit was always my favorite of the Tolkien books when I was a kid.

Unless everything switches to digital projectors. Which I suspect it probably will at some point. But for right now, it's all at 24fps because of the film projectors.
So for Hobbit, maybe when it comes out on blu-ray it'll be at 48fps. Which I also kinda doubt, because even when you buy the Blu-Ray (extended) for LOTR, each movies comes on 2 blu-ray discs because of the file sizes. So... HD at 48fps would probably be more than what can fit on a blu-ray. Especially for extended editions and whatnot (Return of the King is 4.5 hours running time, not including extra content).

Oh, I guess it's also possible for some theatres that have the movie in 3D@48fps with a digital projector, to run the movie and just disable 3D. Never heard of a theatre doing this, but I'm sure it's possible. I know some guys around here that run a theatre, so maybe I can get a special screening going at some point.
As for 48fps file sizes being too large, I don't think that's the case - even 3D blurays don't take much more space than regular blurays, because of the huge similarities between the left and right images ...
The Odeon in Brighton in the UK is 100% digital projectors, they have a advert before the film saying so, so I wouldn't be surprised if most larger cinemas are switching over to 100% digital. Makes you wonder how they can charge 2quid extra for 3d films, if everything is shown digitally it can't make it more expensive to show a 3d film?
no, but it costs more to FILM the 3d movies, as they require special cameras. Double the frames to edit and add special effects to, as 3d cameras film 2 pictures at one time. In the Hobbits case, they are filming at 48 frames a second. Thats already double the frames to edit in most movies. 3d, they need to edit 72 more frames a second, than the typical 2d movie. Not to mention the 3d glasses you get at the theater. Yes, most people recycle them, but some people break them or steal them. Then they still have to clean and repackage them.
They charge a quid for the glasses ontop of the 2quid extra for the 3d! Im not sure I buy editing them adds to the cost, its not as if special effects are hand painted frame by frame! I wonder if the 3d print costs more for the cinema to hire than the 2d? Probably does. Any way this is well off topic and the trailer looked ace!
